So this green-haired loli-looking character is so darn popular. Many are talking about her, and some are crazy over her. Why?

I have listened to some of the songs sung with her voice, but I am not really impressed. Sure, it was interesting on the first few listenings, but after a while, her voice kind of gets on my nerves. Now, I find her voice extremely irritating. I don’t see why people are so fascinated with her. Perhaps this is just my opinion which no one else would share.
She is merely a software, and many otakus rant about how great she is. I don’t see these people ranting about the greatness of other software. I presume this is moe doing it’s work. If Steve Jobs swapped the apple logo for a Moe Mascot, or Linux replaced the penguin with a moe penguin(is this even possible?!), we would probably see otakus ranting and raving about how great these Operating Systems.

Only a few months and there’s a Nendroid preorder up?!
I’m not that into moe, and I rarely watch pure moe shows. I simply just can’t imagine myself wasting 20 odd minutes on a single episode of those shows.
I think from Vocaloid, we learn that the best method to market stuff to otakus is to add a sprinkle of moe, and the product would probably be selling like Haruhi Limited Edition DVDs.

Affirmative, this is stupid bandwagon hopping at its otaku finest. Similar to the Haruhi dances and all that.
Moe is one thing. The science/motivations/software engineering behind it another. The concept is fascinating, It’s, fun and makes money. Didn’t you wish you had thought of it?
One of the world’s greatest examples of Viral Marketing.
It’s definitely a crazy marketing gig. Her voice can be reaaaaaally irritating, especially her version of Bokurano’s OP.. And some person actually thought hers was better than the original..
This is just as nuts as moe ramen and moe cakes and all the things with a moe character slapped on the packaging.
But you gotta applaud the Japanese’s talent for marketing. Releasing such a product under with a moe mascot will definitely draw in more fans, unlike Leon, Lola or Sweet Ann(similar products by other companies.)
well…its really up to personal likings…like how u like rei =p
In my opinion, the company behind Vocaloid had no other intentions than to market a very interesting product, and package it with something that resonates with the otaku crowd. End result: Hatsune Miku.
It’s left to the otaku audience to whether fap… erm, I mean, fornicate on the mascot or otherwise. I just see Vocaloid as one amazing product, ruined by all these shenanigans.
tj_han > I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks this way.
stripey > The concept’s fascinating, but if not for a moe character as a mascot, it would probably have a much lower sales record.
anonymous > Agreed.
skyfish > Those who thought that her voice was better than the original phail.
§oL > The Japanese are just too creative for their own good. LOL
bakaboi > Me liking Rei and this are 2 separate issues.
TP > Ruined indeed. Now when some one mentions Vocaloid, the word OTAKU comes to mind.
I dont really care about Vocaloid actually.
All I know is Miku is filled with MOE.
And I are supporter of MOE. Simple.
l-lawliet > sorry but I R NOT
luckily im a girl.. so this is like.. no effect on me, the moee and all. lol
ON NOES ZENICAL IS A GIRRRRLLLLLLL
Zenruhi is never affected by other sources of moe.
Miku looks great, but the vocaloid software isn’t that good. She definitely can’t beat any of the original singers unless they are Homura Nagi.
Oh and regarding the Operating System, have you seen Chraen’s posts on XP-tan?
DigiGatou > Yes I did. That’s why I didn’t use Microsoft as an example
Actually, I find the voice fascinating (the character design not so much). The voice is definitely not quite human, which is pretty interesting: it doesn’t fall away, or change later in a song, or any of the other little clues that show a voice is coming from a human being. The smoothness and evenness of the performance is moving, in its own way.
Not that I disagree that this is bandwagon-hopping, but the Japanese fascination with robots is interesting in itself. Does it have to do with their/our robotic lives? Does it have to do with the fact that the Japanese workforce is shrinking and more workers are needed?
The concept is interesting, and I like what’s being down with it. The amount of fanfare for it though seems a little unsettling for me. :/
I find the character to be adorable…though the hair drives me insane (who can walk like that?). It does prove how much otakus love moe, because the original Vocaloid didn’t sell until they added Hatsune Miku.
The voice itself, yeah it’s weird. It depends on how well they did it (the “warble” can be absolutely terrible if done by an amateur). I guess we all have our opinions don’t we?
