I did a post earlier between 2 male characters, who shared a rather similar past and current occupation. This time, I have decided to balance it out, and compare between 2 female characters, who are merely linked by being featured characters in the same magazine, Dengeki Bunko.
To decide between the two ladies on which is a better character overall, my choice is rather obvious. With no doubt, Kino has my vote.
OH NOES !!! I begin to hear Shana fan boys and girls yelling out with disatisfaction and picking up their Nietono no Shana, all ready to slaughter me.
Here are 3 points which mainly state why my vote goes to Kino.
- Guns are Cooler than Swords
- Using Magic Ain’t Cool
Anyone can swing a sword and claim that he/she is skilled in using it. However, not many would claim that they are skilled firearms, mainly because it would require a lot of training to be skilled in it. Hence, the skill of using firearms is rather exclusive, as compared to swords. And exclusive equates to a higher score in the cool factor.
Some might argue that swords are cooler than guns, as fighting in close range would exhibit real skill. Screw that thought. Look at Revy from Black Lagoon. When she went up against Mr. Modern-Day-Battousai, she used her guns both for close and ranged combat. I’m pretty sure that Kino could do that too, if she fought Shana. Plus, Kino has knives to aid her in combat.
What does Shana have? A talking pendant and a flaming katana. With her weapons, she can only function at maximum efficiency in close combat.
Of course, I am not saying that Kino would win if she goes up against the Flame Haze. A normal lass, no matter how skilled with guns, could never beat a flaming girl with magical powers. And that brings us to our second point.
Of course it isn’t. Magic is only for cheaters who have no real skill. Shana has magical powers, so she can perform stunts which Kino would never even have dreamed of. With her blazing flames, it would be impossible for Kino to engage her in close combat. Also, I assume her magic would nullify Kino’s bullets. If using magic is not cheating, I don’t know what is.
- If Shana lost her magic powers, Kino would, with her leet quick draw techniques, leave Shana dead on the floor with multiple gun wounds, within minutes.
- The Chances of existing in Real Life
Oops… Wrong Character…
Kino is a normal girl, while Shana is some magical fiery loli. There’s a much higher chance of finding a hawt green haired female sharpshooter, as compared to an absoute zero percent of finding a red-haired blade-wielding magical shoujo.

Imagine meeting a non-cosplaying Kino in real life. How awesome is that?
Tsunderes just don’t match up to the real deal - the silent hawt ones who possess true skill. And Dengeki Bunko should crown Kino as Dengeki Bunko’s Queen, if there ever is such a title.
