NEVER, EVER TRUST Anime for Food Recommendations

Remeber eveyone’s favourite Melon Pan that our dearest Shana-tan totally adores? It looks rather delicious in the anime right? The crispy crust and soft fluffy inner filling, together with the taste of fresh melon pulp. Oishii ne?

Today, I shall uncover the myth of the delicious Melon Pan. This melon pan that I am about to consume will reveal the truth.

A few bites into it and I felt a surge of regret flowing through my veins. My taste buds felt totally cheated. The crust was dry, but there was no crisp. The inside of the bread was rather soft, but tasteless. There was not even the slightest presence of the taste of melon pulp. If not for the sugar sprinkles on the crust, the whole thing would have been like eating plain baked dough.

The melon pan can be simply summed up as “tasteless baked dough with a slightly sweetened dry crust”. Or also known as “crappy tasting bread”.

LOL, Shana’s eating CRAP!!!

Seriously, it is impossible for me to comprehend how Shana is able to consume this on a daily basis. I certainly am unable to. Once is enough for me. Torturing my taste buds is never a good idea.

In fact, the taste was so horrible, I gave up trying to finish it. It was just too difficult to do so.

Bread this good must be treated with special treatment by…

The Fist

And The Cup

In the end, it was the rubbish bin who finished it up for me.

dcf_0104.JPG

I am indeed very biased in this review, as I have ate one, and only one Melon Pan, which happened to have scarred my taste buds. I need to add eating the authentic Melon Pan, made of real fresh melon pulp, to my must-do list the next time I head to Japan. Only then can I fully condemn Shana’s taste, or change my opinion.

My friend also bought a Melon Pan, as well as a chocolate coronet. I was unable to taste the coronet, as he was bringing it home, but here is a photo of it.

dcf_0098.JPG

All photos were taken by a 2megapixel handphone camera, as bread at this standard is only worth taking photos of with such a lousy camera.

I can imagine my friend struggling with his chocolate coronet and melon pan at this very moment. The choclate coronet should taste better though. Chocolate tastes good 98% of the time.

I have learned from this lesson, never to trust anime to recommend anything that you put into your mouth. And that we need more bread in the real world which has a standard on par with Azuma’s Ja-pan.

If only bread tastes as good as Tsukino looks…

Shana seriously has to change her favourite food. Eating crappy food isn’t exactly what popular characters should be doing. Konata too.

Melonpan has no melon obviously. It’s called Melon because it LOOKS like one. The thing is, most Singapore bakers are terrible, especially breadtalk’s partimers.

This is because we are an Asian country obviously. Good pastry here are curry puffs lol, plenty of variety here.

Under the influence of Yakitate Japan, all this while, I thought melon pan was made with some melon pulp. LOL how silly of me.

It was rather tasteless.Maybe they should try blending some melon taste into it.

Anyway, I bought this at the bakery in the basement of Isetan at Shaw House. Can’t remember the name of the bakery though. Definitely not Breadtalk.

And yes, curry puffs are awesome.

You said you only tried it once, but even if you’d consumed thousands - it still wouldnt mean much.
Even your basic daily bread, from the same bakery can be worlds apart, from inducing insatiable gluttony (once it was so tasty, i ate the amount which is usually enough to last me 4 days) to making me vomit (the powerful aroma of yeast was unbearable).

I can only assume that Asians wouldnt know much about that, because the rice and fish dont usually reqire much procession before eating. But bread is quite a long way, technically, from the grain.

Melon pan has no fillings. Thats like eating a bundle of cooked flour. Doesn’t sound that appealing now, does it?

I’ve actually tried a melonpan from some departmental store I’ve forgotten which one. They add some melon stuff inside, and marketed it as melon pan. Don’t know if its a true blue melon pan, but it sure tasted better than plain bread.

Melonpan is pretty good to eat when you’re like really hungry and need a sweet snack. ChocoCoronet is sick and oversweet and too much chocolate *barf* Also if you want a little “flavor” chocochip melon pan is a little less “plain”

  6. 6 jinyamato

the taiwanese melonpan had fruity flavor. i was stunned for a while

  7. 7 double

§oL > I’m thinking that plain bread tastes better. At least it isn’t that dry.

Hinano > The one I tasted was rather tasteless, save for the sugar sprinkled. Maybe I should try the chocochip melon pan.

jinyamato > Fruity? What kind of fruit did it taste like? Melon? Also, I think the Melon pan I tasted sucked so much, because it’s made locally.

it seems that u’re always pulling shana into your posts. LOL

Sorry but it’s just that I have a thing against Shana’s popularity. That’s all ^^

I find melonpan overrated too :( tried it both in japan and sg.. sucks! :( i prefer the hk ver “polo/pineapple” bun sold by crystal jade bakery.. its sooo many times nicer! @_@

  11. 11 double

kaori > yes it is overratted. LOL @ sucky japan melon pans.

Here in Atlanta, a bakery chain called ‘Mozart Bakery’ has what they call ‘Cream Soboru’ which somewhat resembles the shape of melon bread and taste decently. My favorite bread is the big loaf that my wife makes. Did I also tell she makes very good taiyaki and cinnamon rolls as well?

  13. 13 misakichii

I’ve tried that melon pan from that shop too, and i bought 2 huhuh. I thought they were a Japanese bakery. They dint end up in the bin, i forced myself to eat for the sake of Shana!!

I suppose the place you went to is Sun Moulin? The store at Isetan, that is. The melon bread there isn’t that good, and the choco cornets are too sweet. The cream cornets are better, though, since the chocolate coating of the choco cornet keeps falling off after you bite into it. Not to mention, the cream ones look better.

  15. 15 double

Misakichii > LOL you shouldn’t have tortured yourself.

Sylon Beta > Yea that’s the shop. I’m not getting anything from there from now on.

I have only tried the Melon Pans in Japan… which was just as what you said - No Melon at all (But it’s pretty good for breakfast) and the size was about 1.6x times bigger.

They have better pastry there actually. Did quite enjoy the Apple Pie thing that was sold in the Supermarkets for 100 yen ^o^

  17. 17 double

100 yen for Apple Pie? Wow that’s rather cheap. I love apple pies.

  18. 18 Soshi

Haha, actually I find authentic melon pan rather nice. Most Singapore version suck though - that I have to agree.

*facepalm* I never fail to be amazed at the extensive talk of melon-pan, 2 years(?) after the first Shana show appeared.

But… if there is one thing I can say, it’s this: who makes the bread determines its pwnage. Local confectioners? Tough luck, please this way to “Salmonella 101″ chamber.

Not one to spoil the party, but melon-pan (and being recently anti-Shana convert, the whole franchise) is not made of win: in other words, meh.

    Melon Pan is delicious.

I’d eat it for breakfast everyday I was in Japan. The crunchy sugar coated outside was so sweet and yummy and the center was always nice and fluffy.

Here in Australia I can’t buy it but I have made it myself.. to varying degrees of success.

I liked the kind I could buy from 7 eleven while I was there, it was green and the middle was all squishy and orange and melon flavoured. It was sugar coated too. So yummy
