So the name of the second season of Suzumiya Haruhi has been confirmed. Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu. Meh. The title of this post sounds like a much better name for the new season, doesn’t it?

Woohoo!!! Look, Nagato’s the main character!!!
Why does Haruhi have to be the main character? Why can’t Yuki steal the limelight and cast Haruhi into oblivion? The world is simply unfair.
Personally, the one and only reason which got me started on the Suzumiya Haruhi anime series was Nagato Yuki. I wasn’t going to watch it because of some school girl who acts all high and mighty and whom everyone treats as some celestial being possessing godly powers. That would be pure dumb.
I have never liked Haruhi as a character. And I never will understand why people adore her so much that they call themselves “Haruhiist”. Although I am totally straight, I find Kyon a much likable character as compared to Haruhi. At least he is down to earth than she is. Poor Kyon. I can totally understand how he feels each and every time he gets dragged around by the SOS-dan’s leader.
With a main character so irritating, I wonder how the series can become so popular. It must be the power of Nagato Yuki which boosts the sales of merchadise. Only quiet hawt girls who are never “all talk no action” can possess this power which far surpasses the quack powers of girls such as Haruhi.
In short, Yuki should dethrone Haruhi from her position as “Queen”, and the whole series should be renamed after her. Wouldn’t it be awesome to see the series revolving around Yuki’s book reading escapades, her kickass hacking skills, and her mind-blowing battles against aliens and ESPers? I think it would.
Kyon and remain her sidekick, while Haruhi can cuddle in a corner and cry herself to sleep. Sounds good =)
On a final note, do you notice why there’s no mention of Mikuru here? That’s simply because she’s fat and dumb. Who needs her anyway?

What about kyonnoimotou?
As a fellow Nagatoist I can echo your praises but somehow I don’t see Nagato as the spotlight (i.e. with title and hacking battles and whatnot). It seems that a lot of her appeal is of being the ’strong and silent girl’ and having the series revolve completely around her would kind of negate that.
Part of the reason I like characters like Nagato is because they don’t express themselves, because they’re not ‘winners’ in the romance game (if players at all). The moments where Nagato says those things like “Let’s go to the library again”, or the Alternate Nagato of book four, they work because you don’t get to see that side of her a lot.
It’s a similar appeal to the reason people would like Haruhi, the tsundere; that sense of a small achievement, that you get a girl to show a side to you that no one else knows. That’s why we proclaim the small achievements for Nagato, the little emotions she expresses. Somehow I feel that having focus on her all the time would take away a bit of the mystique, a bit of that quiet demeanor she has.
(Either that, or we’d end up with 14 episodes of reading a la Someday in the Rain.)
Whether having that mystique surrounding Nagato is good or not, is a question for another ridiculously long rant like this one.
Incidentally, from informal polls at AnimeSuki it seems Nagato is tied with Haruhi as the most popular character, so it’s not like we’re getting the shaft here.
And a parting remark…Mikuru needs more development. Yeah, I wanted to say that.
“Mikuru needs more development.”
Hmm… You would think that Mikuru already had the best development than every other characters in the show, if you know what I mean.
Yuki subscribes to the desert theory. She does so little and that is precisely why people like it. It’s similar to one glass of water in a desert, compared to Haruhi’s river. Whose water is more precious?
You cannot have a main character of the desert theory, then your show would be panned.
After rewatching Haruhi, I now swear allegiance to Tsuruya-san instead of Yuki lol.
l-lawliet > She doesn’t even have a name …
CCY > Like I say Mikuru is fat and dumb, hence there’s no need for any development.
tj_han > No wonder you keep churning out nyoro comics. Stop it. Try tripeman comics for a change.
Yay, I finally found something we both like, after our AsukaXRei differences.
I can’t wait.
‘Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu’ is easily my favourite book of the series. My best guess is that they’ll mine that one for core material, then draw on unused stories from the third, fifth and sixth books for side/filler episodes.
i forsee more and more churuya doujins in future. :3 nyoron~
§oL > Why don’t you like Rei? Rei is like… the grand ancestor of Yuki…
Diego > I’m not really all that excited about the new season, but I should still be watching it.
bj0rn > OH NOES!!!
Let’s assume that each chapter from book 4 gets into the novel.
So that makes it 6 episodes. But we need to take into account the “Bamboo leaf rhapsody”, so that’s 7. Now add the prologue for book 7 where the events in book 4 get cleaned up. That’s 8 episodes.
Now add the 3 episodes involving the dissociation of Suzumiya Haruhi (as the rumours claim) plus “The melancholy of Asahina Mikuru” (involving the same characters). That’s 12. And we have to include “Snow mountain syndrome”, so that makes it 13.
But we NEED to include the chapters involving Nagato Yuki, like “Charmed at first sight lover”, and the one with the poem in the 8th book. Because, of course, Nagato becomes the main character in this second season (read the 4th novel and you’ll understand).
I wonder if we’ll include the book “The intrigues of Suzumiya Haruhi”, which also involves one of the characters from dissociation.
And we can’t have a Haruhi TV series with some fillers and intro, so I’d say we have more than enough material for a full-fledged 24 episode series.
Of course - if the characters from “dissociation” are, after all, not included, then the series will be much shorter than we expect.
