This song originated more than 10 years ago, together with the beginning of Evangelion, with the original singer being Takahashi Youko.
The following are the various versions of the song:
- Animetal released a heavy metal version of the song on their Animetal Marathon V album.
- There exists a version sung by the Japanese voice actors of Rei Ayanami (Megumi Hayashibara), Asuka Langley Soryu (Yuko Miyamura), and Misato Katsuragi (Kotono Mitsuishi), as well as another cover by Megumi Hayashibara on her Center Color album.
- Shōko Nakagawa also released a cover version of the song on her Falling in love with anime songs album.
- Masami Okui performed a live rendition of the song at Anime Friends 2004.
- Ogata Megumi has performed live covers of the song during her concerts.
With a song this popular, Shimokawa Mikuni has hopped on the bandwagon and released her very own rendition of 残酷な天使のテーゼ.
Her voice, when compared to Takahashi Youko, pales in comparison, due to it being less defined. Still, this is still a worthy listen. If you liked her vocals from Full Metal Panic, you would enjoy this like I do. It was quite a pleasant surprise that she decided to sing a version of the classic hit.
Overall, she did a commendable job for the song. I must get this album!!!
