I spent my Christmas Night watching the 2 hour long animated flick released in 1984, and I must say it was a good 2 hours spent. I’m convinced that it’s a zillion better than the countless MOE mongering crap that floats around in the anime scene these days. And I feel quite retarded for not viewing this epic movie till yesterday.

This movie has it all; Romance, Action, Mecha, Music. I was impressed with it, considering it was released in the 1980s. It was a truly epic feature for its time, just as Evangelion was epic for its time. Heck, I wasn’t even on this Earth then.

Despite the graphics being a notch below the anime aired in the 21st century, the storyline was a pioneer. Basically, there’s a love triangle between a hero and 2 girls, fights among 3 armies in the universe, and a happy ending. Don’t you agree that some parts of this storyline appear frequently in post 1980s anime?
For the romance portion of the film, I secretly wanted Minmay and Hikaru to be together, but I guessed it wasn’t possible. I didn’t really like the Hayase’s character. One thing I felt, however, was that too much of the film revolved around the love triangle. I was hoping for more satisfying battle scenes, but the only decent one was the final battle.

<3 Minmay
The whole movie was an enjoyable watch, and the climatic battle scene with the theme song, (愛・おぼえていますか), was a blast. Actually, it was after I heard the song in Shimokawa Mikuni’s latest album when I decided to watch the movie. I never expected such an awesome track to be produced more than 20 years ago.

The End of Evangelion adapts a rather similar battle ending scene, with the theme song going on, and at the same time, including the battle sound effects. Of course, the End of Evangelion is superior, because of the mindfuck factor, and the kickass battle sequences. Macross - Do You Remember Love? can be considered as the End of Evangelion for its time.
Oh well, enough of this rant. Since this movie is a mere retelling of the original Macross TV series, I should get my full dose of Macross by watching the original series.

Macross just wouldn’t be Macross if it didn’t have love triangles. I love DYRL, being more polished and fast paced than the TV series which really drags its feet on the love triangle issue (mostly becuase of the last few episodes which were tagged onto the end), but the TV series is alot stronger as develops the story alot better thanks of course to its longer runtime.
I watched the first few episodes of Macross and lost the rest due to a HDD crash.
Rei is a piece of MOEblob as well ^^; (J/K)
windbell > If Rei is a MOEblob, then I got no idea what the rest of the anime girls are.
