WTF? Have I been an Otaku for Almost Half My Life?

According to tj_han’s post on defining the otaku, I came to a sudden realization that I have actually been an otaku for slightly lesser than half my life. According to the post, an Otaku is not only one who places great emphasis on anime, but one who places great emphasis on one’s own fantastic media world.

It all started around 7 years ago. At that time, I did not even know what anime was, despite some random viewings of various series screened on television. In fact, it was only a year ago when I begun on the route of anime. Before that however, if my memory serves me right, I was quite an otaku. Not an anime one, but a gaming one.

A Showdown Between Guns and Katana

The noisy Flame Haze who swings her katana screaming “Urusai” thrice in a row. The silent green haired traveller who is skilled in the use of firearms.

I did a post earlier between 2 male characters, who shared a rather similar past and current occupation. This time, I have decided to balance it out, and compare between 2 female characters, who are merely linked by being featured characters in the same magazine, Dengeki Bunko.

To decide between the two ladies on which is a better character overall, my choice is rather obvious. With no doubt, Kino has my vote.

OH NOES !!! I begin to hear Shana fan boys and girls yelling out with disatisfaction and picking up their Nietono no Shana, all ready to slaughter me.

Loot : Claymore Hottie + 2 Mini Apostles

It’s been quite some time since I last purchased a figurine, the last one being the Max Factory translucent fiery-haired Shana. Today, I got this Claymore wielding, amour cladded lady.

2007_12120001.JPG

If my memory does not fail me, this is a rather popular item due to the prototype displayed at the various figurine events. Everyone was totally fooled by the prototype. The prototype had awesome light reflecting shiny amour, while all that the actual one has is crappy dull amour.

It is rather disappointing when the figurine makers do not keep to what they have promised in the prototypes, but I guess sometimes, stuff like this happen. Overall, however, I would rate Clare as a better than average figurine, as it was the claymore that helped her improve her overall score.

Also, I made 2 rather impulse purchases today.

Is Your Entire Musical Preference 101% Purely Related to Anime?

There are some people who just watch anime, and the only music that they like and tune in to are the anime opening and ending theme songs. There are also others who watch anime, but their choice of music they listen to does not end with just anime songs, but expands on to a wide range of Japanese Pop.

I watch anime, but my music library does not end at anime-related songs. In fact, about 50% of my music library is Japanese Pop which has no link to anime. The other 50% is anime-related music, such as OSTs and theme songs. And yes, all I have are Japanese music, Japanese music and more Japanese music.

Even though I lack the skills to play any musical instrument and have no sense of rhythm, I love listening to music, especially good music. Good music does not necessarily have to be popular music. I know of obscure artistes who compose and sing songs which are much better than the mainstream pop songs. Not that I am saying that mainstream is bad.

For example, has anyone heard of Tsubaki? No, not that animeblogger Tsubaki, but the Japanese Rock band. You would probably not have know this rather unknown band, especially if you only listen to anime songs. That’s because all their releases were not even remotely connected to anime. I too, did not notice the existence of this band till one fine day, when I chanced upon one of their newer singles.

I listened, got hooked, and moved on to more of their music. Their latest full album release, Portrait+, has a rather awesome compilation of songs. What attracted me to their songs would be the laid back feeling that their music possesses. Their style of music reminds me of Bump of Chicken.

I shall take this opportunity to promote one of my favourite Japanese bands. I have done so with Bump of Chicken, but it was a pity I did not have any sample tracks. This time, however, I shall provide some tracks for you to judge whether their music suits your taste.

Here are some of my favourites in Portrait+ :

Gurren Lagann DVD 5 Special Audio Dorama CD

The fifth DVD of Gurren Lagann was released a few weeks ago, and I finally got it. There was the regular edition as well as the limited release edition. A cookie for anyone who guessed which one I got my hands on.

You Need Good Sleep to Fully Enjoy Anime

Sleeping on a mattress every night certainly is never going to give one good sleep. And to think I have been sleeping on a mattress for the past 5 years. A single sized mattress makes sleeping more difficult as I have the tendency to roll off the mattress.

But no longer will I have to do so. The reason is this :

I’ll have 2 ARX-8 Revoltechs, Please =)

Looks like there’s another Revoltech release to look forward to. Recently, at the Revoltech Expo, this was one of the new prototypes showcased. I did not realise that Laevatein was at featured at the Expo until someone in IRC mentioned it.

arx-8_revoltech.jpg

Even though the current prototype is not coloured, it already looks awesome. Looks like this would be another must-buy Revoltech Figurine, like Ayanami Rei and Gurren Lagann.

There is currently no official release date for Laevatein, but my guess is some time around May or June.

Full Metal Panic Armslaves seriously need more mecha love. There are only extinct trading figurines of some of the Armslaves, and no official statement on the 1/60 scaled versions. Hopefully, Alter would surprise us with the long awaited announcement. And even if they fail to do so, I do hope that Revoltech continues to complete all the Armslaves. Especially ARX-7 and M9.

This is Why Full Metal Panic has a Better Male Lead Character than Gundam 00

Many have noted the similarities between the main star of Gundam 00, Setsuna F. Seiei, and the male lead from Full Metal Panic, Sagara Sousuke. There are indeed quite a few similarities between the two, such as both of them having a past as a child soldier, and both being pilots of some form of mecha. However, I would like to think that despite their similar backgrounds, Sagara is a few hundred levels better than Setsuna.

Let me explain why.

Detective Conan : Movie 12 + Dorama 02

No one blogs about Detective Conan. Or at least no one whom I know. Everyone probably thinks that Detective Conan is just another typical shonen anime/manga series which is not worth paying any attention to. But not me. I think it’s awesome.

Anyway first piece of news about Detective Conan is the 12th Movie. For the benefit of those who don’t know, there’s a Detective Conan movie release annually in April, sometime during the Golden Week period. That’s quite a long way Detective Conan has gone, isn’t it?

The title of this 12th theatrical feature is 「戦慄の楽譜」, with 楽譜 read as フルスコア. The English translation would be “Full Score of Fear”. The release date of the movie can be seen after the break.
