Doujin events such as Comiket are held, and many risk their lives, braving the scorching heat or bone-chilling winds, queuing for hours and hours for popular doujinshi. I’m amazed at their determination, and at the same time, I have no idea what the source of this die-hard determination is. Can unofficial art actually fuel this great passion?

Personally, I am not a fan of doujin artworks. I’m not denying that there are many great doujin art around, but I seem to be more of an official merchandise collector. The official sticker is appealing to me.
After having embarked on the otaku route for most than a year, my collection of doujinshi remains at a pathetic 0. When I headed to Akihabara and had a limited time of 1 hour, I spent most of my time looking for official stuff such as figurines and pencilboards. I wasn’t bothered with doujinshi.
This mindset is probably due to my lack of encounters with doujinshi.
So far, I have read one and only one. Re-take, an Evangelion Doujinshi that’s rated 18+. Instead of many who read doujins for the fantastic fappable H-artworks, I read it because I was interested in the storyline and the possible mindfuck. The part which hooked me was it being an alternate Evangelion ending. It might be epic.
And it was.
However, as much as I enjoyed the storyline, I did not enjoy the H-scenes a single bit. I have to admit though, the H-scenes were rather befitting of the storyline. Fortunately, it was only Asuka who was violated by Shinji.

One thing that I dislike about doujinshi is that majority are H-orientated. I am unable to comment anything about the storyline due to my lack of exposure.Many might enjoy seeing some of their favourite characters screwing the crap out of each other, but I actually hate it. You might find me weird saying this, but it’s a total degrading act towards a character you like.
Sigh. I just don’t understand why people like it, and I probably never will.
On an ending note, the only doujin that I would probably ever get would be RE-TAKE. It’s really awesome.

Yay, finally you post pictures of Asuka instead of Rei. Well, I’ve not read much doujin myself, but I guess most people read it for the H.
One of my favourite is some Nanoha doujin(I forgot who drew it). It was more laugh then sex, and that probably appeals to me more. Dun get me wrong, I just don’t wanna see some KyonXHaruhi or AkiraXMinoru. Disgusting.
Well, your own opinion is fine and all, but doujinshi doesn’t necessary need to be plagarism of others original work (though more often than not, it is). There’s also original doujinshi out there, some of which spawned popular manga and anime. Excel Saga and Lucky Star are the only ones I remember right now, though.
Like you, I consider myself a “only-buy-official-brand-stuff”-kinda of guy, but I’m fully aware of the original doujinshis out there, and some of them are worth taking a look at.
§oL > That’s because Rei’s not the main feature of Re-Take. Still, it is impressive.
Aeternus > Original Doujinshis are rare finds in the massive sea of doujin art. Breathtaking ones are even more difficult to obtain, hence my lack of exposure to them.
I agree with you on the excessive H part. However there are some interesting doujins, such as the parody of Initial D featuring train drivers.
If you do take out the H part, there are still many interesting doujins that have very nice stories. Maybe you need to read more instead of sticking to EVA ^^;
@0ne: Multi-track drifting?!
One > Those are the ones that are difficult to find. The H ones are plentiful.
Windbell > Any nice ones to recommend? I have no idea where to start or what circles to look for.
Yes, you are correct, double, they’re hard to find, sadly.
And yes, there’s a sea of ecchi of there, which I’m not a fan of. Gotta make that clear. It’s rather difficult to browse doujinshi without getting exposed to those vulgar-over-the-top hentai mangas. But there’s obviously a “market” for it, since people keep making it. I reckon most japanese love to see their all time favorite character getting screwed over. And others love to draw it.
I think it´s sad people still have such a problem with one of
the most normal things i the world….sex!
And it´s drawn so nobody has been hurt in the making of the H-scenes
only possible the artists hand….
Grow up and stop lying to your self.
ScArls > I would rather the doujinshi be focused on the storyline. The most important element that is on par with art is the storyline. I am not going to just read something just purely for sex.
For a person to think that sex can and will be a sound substitute for storyline, I feel rather sorry for that person.
