Recently, I chanced upon this Evangelion Doujin game that was released light years ago, and decided to try it out. Until now, I still have not figured out what the game’s name is. Or maybe it just wasn’t named.

The game was rather straightforward. Despite it being a Japanese doujin game, there isn’t any Moonspeak involved, so everyone can play it. Before you begin, you can choose which side you want to be on. You can play either against the computer or another human player.

The Angels or Nerv. Nerv has the Evangelions, the helicopters and Pen Pen, while that Angels have erm, Angels. Which side you pick does seem to matter.
Nerv has more units that can be summoned, while the Angels have some units that have special powers, such as causing an enemy unit that has been hit to be unable to function for the next turn, or transport an enemy unit that has been attacked to a random point on the map. There is nothing written on which unit has what ability, so you would have to try out both sides to find out.

The gameplay is simple. A few rounds and you would probably get used to it.
First, the Angels : 1 box is your current turn number. For each side, there will be certain turns when you get new units to summon. The END box over the picture is to show that a unit has used up all its moves for the turn. In a normal turn, you can move and attack, or just attack from where you are.
Next up the the unit’s name, the unit’s hitpoints, followed by the unit’s attack moves. Each unit has a different set of moves. To understand what each move, read it in this order. In this case for example, B-lance has a range of 1 square, as it is labelled R1. The distance can be vertical, horizontal or diagonal.
First the move name. Next the maximum number of squares away from the enemy in order to execute the move. Finally, the number of times the move can be executed. A * means that there is no limit.
Remember to check your Unit button every turn. You wouldn’t want to miss summoning a new unit, as a fresh summon would be inactive for that turn.
Other than that, there’s nothing else which I need to explain. The rest is up to you.
I have played this game for a couple of rounds, but I am still unable to defeat the computer. Drats, I suck at strategy games. Or maybe the computer’s just overpowered.
This game’s amusement level can be compared to the fun you derive from playing Solitaire, although it requires much more thought and planning if you want to beat the computer. You can give it a shot if you’re interested. It’s an extremely small file (< 2mb), so I’ve uploaded it here. Enjoy!

I used to love this game! NERV is actually rather overpowered once you get multiple EVA units. The Angels start strong, but their mid-game units are not that great. The best is winning with PenPen if you hold out long enough with NERV.
I used to be able to win this game in about 15 moves, but I forget if it was with NERV or the Angels. Either way, I remember you had to detonate Rei or get her to detonate in order to do it.
I played this game years ago, it was pretty fun.
Kabitzin > My PenPen got killed in a single hit. LOL
Skh > And I just started a few days ago.
This game was fun. I used to play it all of the time back on my Windows 95 comp. I’m downloading it for nostalgia lol.
Gives me some ideas since I am starting to make little Flash games myself (eg http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/422707 )
