Ever since I finished the novel World War Z, I’ve always wanted to write a post related to zombies. I wanted to write a mini scenario that was similar to the one in the novel, yet related to anime. After some thought, I decide to set the scenario in the world of FMP, before Amalgam’s brutal massacre of Mithril.

Here goes.
Imagine this situation:
Amalgam has been doing intensive research on an extremely virulent pathogen, with the intention of using it as biochemical weapon for world domination. Research goes on as normal, until a laboratory accident occurs. A couple of Amalgam researchers came into bodily fluid contact with that virus and are sent to a military hospital. There, they expire.
Hours later, the hospital brims with an air of chaos. The corpses had reanimated, and numerous vicious attacks of the living dead clawing and chomping on the staff of the hospital had been reported. Amalgam tried to supress the mysterious attack, but all was in vain. Instead of reducing the numbers, Amalgam’s ineffective tactics were futile, and majority of it’s men were ravaged and turn into monstrous beings.
Due to a sudden turn of unexpected events, the infection could not be contained. Within days, the undead army grew progressively in numbers and soon became a threat to Mankind’s existence.
Someone had to do something to prevent the extinction of humans. With a superpower organisation (no doubt evil) exhausted in the fight against the undead, and the rest of the world’s nations busy keeping the zombies out of their own backyard, another private military organisation raised it’s arms and joined in the crusade against the seemingly never-ending horde of monsters that roamed the ends of the Earth. Mithril, the sworn enemy organisation of Amalgam.
I guess that’s enough of setup. Now, let’s take a look at how Mithril and some of it’s troops would stand against a world of zombies, and whether the rescue of Mankind’s annihilation is plausible.

Sagara Sousuke
Considering his expertise in military combat and all the frequent out-of-the-world stunts, one would consider his chances of surviving to be much higher than other humans. He has the equipment and the skills to clinch victory in war. All this time, he has been fighting against humans. Humans who know fear. However, the enemy this time knows to fear, or rather, it is emotionless. This is a disadvantage for him.
Sousuke also possess the ability to use the Lambda Driver included in his AS. The AS could turn the tide of the battle, or just become another piece of useless junk. ECS wouldn’t work, as zombies will still be able to detect the AS. Depending on what Sousuke targets his attacks on and how quick he wipes the undead horde. One wrong move such as overusing the Lambda Driver could leave him stranded in his Armslave without any power remaining, surrounded by a sea of rotting animated bodies, awaiting the grim reaper.
On the other hand, if he does a quick sweep and is able to return back to the TDD-1 for a power and ammo refill, his survival is almost guaranteed.
If Sousuke possess the intelligence to blow the crap out of the enemies’ brains, and at the same time keep his distance, he might just be able to survive the onslaught of the zombies. However, if he act like a fearless hero, going straight on against the undead, his professional skills would never be able to save him from joining the ranks of those monsters.

Kurz Weber
Although he is often portrayed as a flirtatious joker, he does possess concrete skills that are no joke at all when it comes to desperate situations. His sniping skills are top-notch, and he is also a trained AS pilot. His essential role in the mission of cleansing Mother Earth of the undead would be that of a sniper. “Why essential?”, you ask.
As a sniper, he has undergone rigorous training to drill the instinct of aiming the head. Hence, his shots would probably kill any zombie within a single hit, or two if the vital part is missed by an inch. As long as he snipes off the enemy in a protected zone, his chances of surviving are much higher than Sousuke’s.

Melissa Mao
Another AS pilot, she is skilled in the art of maneuvering the war machine. I don’t have much to say about her, as her skills are at least on par, if not better than Sousuke’s. Her chances of surviving are similar to Sousuke’s.

Teletha Tessa Testarossa
Besides being a Whispered, I don’t see how she can contribute in any other ways. If the Black Technology is useless against the zombies, she would probably be incapable of contributing to the war effort in any way except commanding the TDD-1.
With her miserable physical limits and skills in operating firearms, she is literally zombie bait. She would only survive if she remains underwater in the safety of her submarine. That is, unless an infected being somehow makes its way onboard…

Richard Mardukas
His experiences in land battle is an uncertain fact, but no one can deny that he is a genious in aquatic warfare. But you might ask, what’s the use of knowledge in underwater battles?
As zombies are mindless beings that roam the Earth, it is not uncommon to see a number of them entering areas such as the sea. That’s because they lack the ability to process any thoughts. Again, you might ask, wouldn’t they die?
The fact is, zombies are able to survive underwater too, as those fiends do not require the slightest bit of oxygen. The only thing they require is their brain to be intact. That’s the reason why zombies seem like they won’t go back to hell even after their bodies have suffered unimaginable damage.
That is when Mardukas enters the picture. With his talent, wiping out the aquatic zombies and making the seas a safer refuge for the remaining survivors of Mankind would be a piece of cake. Like Tessa, he would remain well alive if he works within the solace of the TDD-1. Even if he does go onshore, his chances of survival are much higher than Tessa’s.

Wraith (God Knows What Her Real Name is…)
A master of disguise will have no effective use against the zombies. As long as you are not one of them, they will continue to ravage you. Unless Wraith hides in a protected zone, she would probably be one of the undead. After all, she is not much of an expert in combat, with the closest being a mere military spy. Who needs spies when the enemy doesn’t even have the slightest bit of intelligence?

Andrei Sergeivich Kalinin
I suppose Kalinin is an wise old sage who has a treasure chest full of combat and survival experiences. As Operations Director, he would probably be committing to the war while underwater in the TDD-1. Like Tessa and and Mardukas, he should survive underwater, away from direct danger.

Mithril, on a whole
If Mithril manages a swift recovery against the initial terror and disorder, maintains its supplies, and instructs all of its troops to go for the head of the undead, there should not be any major problems. If it isn’t able to, then I can see Sousuke and gang turning into reanimated pounds of rotting flesh.
Eventually, a combined effort with the various governments of the world should vanquish majority of the undead from the face of the Earth.
One problem they might face, however, would be Amalgam. As the war against the non-living might drag over a few years, Amalgam might have recovered its power and decide to grab the opportunity, proceeding with its initial plan. If that happens, Mithril and the other organisations which possess a threat might be wiped out faster than the zombies.
It is highly impossible for Amalgam to undergo such a speedy salvation. However, if it occurs in the worst case situation, there would be 2 outcomes. One, Amalgam would wipe out the zombies, together with its threats. Two, Amalgam wipes out the organisations, but in turn, gets zombified.

Enough of the gloom and doom. Here’s some fanservice to lighten the mood.
Alright, I guess I should end the analysis here. Writing this was rather entertaining for me. I should have actually written a proper fanfic, but I’m simply too lazy and have decided to list all the main chunk in point form.

And since we are on the topic of zombies, do check out the book that I mentioned earlier, World War Z. It’s a rather short read of 300 odd pages, so I would recommend it as a must-read for horror and zombie fans. One thing about World War Z that makes it stand out from other zombie novels is the presence of elements lacking from the rest, such as politics and social problems. Unlike other zombie stories that only revolve around a small group’s survival, this book consists of a wide coverage, giving the reader a bird’s eye view over the zombie onslaught’s detrimental effects on the entire human race.
I think I have done enough free publicity for the book here.
So, after reading this fictional plot of mine, what are your opinions? Have I miscalculated the survival chances of the various militants? Have I left out a possible scenario? Or does my analysis hit the bullseye?

You forget one important thing. Giant robots can step on zombies. This changes much in the way of logistics when it comes to ammo.
Just finished the book a few days back. Compliments the author’s previous Zombie Survival Guide very well.
Can’t comment much on the scenario. Except, early stages will be make or break the organization, and how about resupply/power in the long run? And let’s not forget rampant nuclear use by rouge organizations coupled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. ( Tessa’s the most vulnerable)
Also, can’t wait for the World War Z movie to get the green light.
Warpshadow > Stomping the zombies does not necessary mean killing them. You may destroy their bodies, but as long as their brain survives, they will continue to live on.
MrMayat > I’m looking forward to the movie too.
Just use Lambda Driver and destroy all of their body… Venom destroyed just 1 hit in FMP : TSR… what about zombie as small as human ???
Bring Gundam too enjoy this war
