Laggy Desktop : Reformatted For A Greater Cause

Recently, my desktop has been giving up on me. Since quite some time ago, my desktop has been lagging very badly, and some software wasn’t working as it should. The lag was often unbearable even when playing videos, especially 720p videos, and my system would often freeze for no reason. My Creative Media Player Video Converter would alert an error whenever I tried to convert anything, and my DVD burner just wouldn’t burn a single disc.

Some Japanese otaku’s workstation. The screens suck, but the layout’s cool.

Also, just last week, my power supply unit died on me after 2 years, so I had to purchase a new one. These are all telltale signs of my computer’s limits. I plan to change my desktop soon, but due to a lack of financial ability to do so now, I can only settle for a reformat for the time being.

The reformat was done rather quickly, and everything was back up within an hour. Before I reformatted, my computer’s desktop was in a big mess, with icons flooding the entire screen. Since a reformat can be considered as a new start, I have cleared all the icons on the desktop, including the recycle bin. Also, I installed a Macintosh OSX skin to utilize the iMac-lookalike toolbar as a shortcut for the frequently used programs. Compared to the original windows theme, the display looks visually enticing.

I was planning to dual boot Windows XP with Ubunutu, but I gave up on the idea as my current disk space is a pathetic 80gb. The dual booting plan would have to wait.

I have been running dual screens ever since I last changed my graphics card about 9 months ago. All I have to say is, running dual screen is uber awesomeness. Before I reformatted, I was running 1024 X 768 pixels for both screens, the primary being my 19″ Acer, and the secondary being the 26″ HD-ready Samsung. This time, I decided to go with the resolution of 1280 X 1024 pixels for my primary screen, while 26″ remains at 1024 X 768 pixels. I’m unable to set 1280 X 1024 for it, and I have no idea if the problem lies with the screen or graphics card.

Anyway, here’s a screenshot of my desktop.

Left to Right : Secondary Screen, Primary Screen

Not exactly impressive in any sense, but I like how my primary screen is. It feels like I’m working in Nerv, although I’m not exactly sure if Nerv has its own logo as a wallpaper for all its workstations.

Currently, everything is running rather smoothly, although my CPU is freaking noisy and there’s still some lag. I guess both are unavoidable as my current desktop has been slogging under my notorious command for slightly more than 2 years. Chances are, this would last me a few more months, and before the second half of 2008, I have to get a new PC.

And for those sick of the standard windows theme :

I recommend getting an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU. Great bang for the buck!

Mm, two screens. I need to save up for a nice BIG monitor to watch my anime on. A relative dual boots his laptop with Ubuntu, and he’s pretty pleased with it. Not great for gaming, apparently, but pretty user-friendly and wikkid reliable [not his words].

Don’t give up on dual booting Ubuntu! Ubuntu takes very little room compared to windows. I’m currently dual booting with a 40GB HD and I love it.(posting this with Ubuntu in fact)

IKnight > I don’t really game, so it should be alright for me.

NPC > Wow 40GB? But don’t you suffer a massive shortage of space? The Ubuntu Installation is 4gb, and Windows takes up another few gigabytes.
