I’ve never really gotten the reasons why some people like Lolis and Shotas. And neither have I gotten the reason why some people are pedophiles. The reasons are probably too complex and twisted for me to understand, but in this post, I shall rack my brains over reasons why Shotacon is popular.
There are probably two main Shotacon groups. The female, ranging from aged 18 to god-knows-how-old, and the perverse middle aged male pedophiles.Besides the 2, there are still other minorities, but listing all the possible kinds of people who are shotacons would be a pain, or like how they say it in Ooita dialect 「よだきい (yodakii)」, which means 「面倒くさい (mendoukusai)」. See, you’ve learnt some new Japanese today!
I ain’t going to analyse the reasons for the latter group, since it can be easily summed up as twisted fantasies. Why the hell would a grown man want to turn to young boys, or guys who look like young boys? For fuck’s sake, look at grown up women instead.
As for the females, I have actually rewired my brain to think like theirs’ just specially for the purpose of writing this. Feel free to fire away at the points which have been conjured due to a mistake in the rewiring.
1. Shotas are rare
How often do you see a shota, as compared to say…. a bishonen? Even if you compare the number of shotas to lolis, the loli population would overwhelm. Hence, it is an undeniable fact that shotas are quite exotic. So far, I have only seen a couple of shotas in real life, and there was in secondary school. Ever since I graduated, I haven’t seen any. With shotas being exotic, it is no wonder why people have a liking for them. Think of it as the same reason why many handphone lovers outside of Japan want Japanese imported handphones. Wait, I don’t think that was a really good example… But what the heck, let’s just stick with that until someone gives a better one.
2. Females who are shotacons never had younger brothers
I’m not too sure about this, since I don’t have the figures and all to prove this point. However, if you think about it, being in a relationship with a shota would be sort of equivalent to having a young brother whom you can care for. Those females who have younger brothers as siblings would know how much of a pain in the ass they are, similar to those males who have younger sisters. However, those who don’t will continue to lust for one. The grass is always much greener on the other side, or so it appears to be.
3. World Domination
Nah, it’s more like domination in the relationship. Since you are older than you male counterpart, or at least look older, you would probably feel more superior in the relationship. This point would probably apply to the headstrong “hataraki man” type of females. Instead of being pampered, they want to be the one pampering.
Speaking from personal experience, I’ve actually met a female who appears to have shotacon tendencies. It was rather fortunate that it wasn’t too overwhelming.

There have actually been lots of studies that show men generally prefer women of their peak sexual age (aka, after puberty, 15-17). Youth are strong, fit, and lack the bodily degradation that hits when you pass 18.
It may be socially odd, but there are lots of biological reasons for finding young people attractive.

So what is shotacon and what is it about?
Basically, in my way of thinking, Shota would be not only sexual atration to younger boys, but in some cases is just the apeareance what they’re looking for. In my oun liking I search more for the inocent cute child doing nothing special than the hentai images; if I use your understanding, I’m searching for a kid brother that I want to protect and teach (no, I don’t have younger brothers) but actually that’s it.
I like shota but because of the little ones involved in it. I’m more interested in the perverts that take advantage of them. I’m attracted to middle aged perverted men who are so desperate to get sexual contact (since they can’t get women) that they would do anything or anyone to get it. Watching porn. Masturbating. I’m a 17-year-old girl who’s been looking at shota since she was 13 (maybe younger), and I’ve always looked at it for the same reason you said “middle aged men” do.
So, you can either group me in with the middle aged men or stop using stereotypes.
P.S. I think there’s another motive behind a shotacon wanting to have a little brother, if you know what I mean.

I decided to play around with your three reasons. After all, you wanted teenage girls to help you with any errors in brain rewiring.
1)Shota ain’t that rare; not irl or picture wise.
I look at shota whenever I feel like it.
2)I may wish for a younger brother, but I am aware of how annoying little boys can be, unlike what you said. Gee, why would a person who finds little boys attractive want one around even when they know about the annoyance factor? It may have something to do with the fact she is attracted to younger boys! (After all, I only longed for a little brother after I became a shotacon. Not the other way around.)

I think it’ll be easier for you to figure out why shotacons like shotas by looking at the stereotype of shotas and not the stereotype of shotacons.
Judging by the anime stereotype of shotas, most of them are usually innocent, lovable and fuss-free little boys which largely resemble live stuffed animals. Most females have a soft spot for stuff like these… some motherly instinct I should think. Nonetheless, your points are still more or less correct, though I do feel that the first and second point aren’t quite so accurate. There are a lot of shotas hanging around if people bother to look, and I don’t think the shotacons are really interested in playing sister to their shota. It’s more of the feeling of being needed, which you seldom can get from older partners.
I suppose this could probably be applied to lolicons as well, though in my opinion with lolicons there are a lot more perverse sexual attraction involved.

I completely disagree. I am a 21 year old female with 2 younger brothers and 2 younger sisters who are incredibly annoying. I don’t think the characters depicted in shota manga and anime really resemble real boys, as they aren’t annoying(and any little boy can get on ones nerves after a while, trust me my youngest sibling is 10 and he never stops talking).
The appeal, for me, with shota is that they are so darn cute! I also must admit I like it for the sex as well. My own preference tends towards two young boys experimenting with sex together. Hmm… I’m a guy, and I first started looking at shotacon when i was a teenager; i’m 18 now. I’m straight, for that matter, but it just comes down to what’s attractive and what’s not. There’s just some sort of qualities in a youth that some people find attractive. The Greeks often found this; there’s communities of people who love Yaoi and Shotacon who are straight men and not 50-year olds.
With that said, i RARELY look at Shotacon now a-days. I look at Yaoi or Hentai more.
