What I invision is that, go with me here, Akari’s family moves again around the same time that Tohno did thus cutting off all communication. They wrote like every 6 months or something? By the time the next letters were to be written They both had new addresses and no way of contacting each other. This would be a very sad thing and in my opinion add a whole lot more to this story, though something like that is more likely than we like to imagine. That six-month period is enough time for a lot to change.

I was about to post something quite personal here - then decided that it would probably be better to write it into my own review of Byousoku 5cm (which won’t see the light of day until my LE R2 DVD arrives). Bottom line: I know from bitter experience that it would be the height of stupidity to let your Akari slip away just like Takaki did.

In answer to your question: yes, if I loved someone that much I would attempt to visit her if I could get the money together but, it wouldn’t accomplish anything. It would be more of a farewall than a fateful reunion that could fix everything and honestly, that’s what I felt the final separation was showing. Even after collecting enough money to travel that distance and back, it would take an ordinary student a year or two to get the money as you said so one or two visits would be the maximum - not enough to sustain a relationship, and even more unnecessary pain.

Yea, maybe it’s just like what you said, Akari was avoiding his efforts to contact her, and Takaki wasn’t courageous enough to pursue his love.

I don’t like animated romance, but Byousoku 5cm is the only exception. The situation and even the lyrics of the theme song does apply to real life in some ways, and I can totally relate to the helplessness and longing that Takaki has. There are certain reasons why I write such posts, with one simply to make me feel better.

Who was he texting all the time in the second section then…? She’s the only logical person considering how fixated he was with it. It seems more like she stopped responding to him. It’s likely she realised/believed that attempting to a continue a relationship that seemed so destined to fail was only causing increasing pain to the both of them the further they drifted apart.

It makes no sense that he could possibly lose all contact with her. Even if they simply wrote each other letters before mobile phones became common, they would always make sure they always knew each other’s new address each time they moved.

By the way, I thought you said you didn’t like animated romance?
