Anime DVD Collecting

I bought my first Region 2 anime DVD back in the start of 2007. 6 Black Lagoon DVDs from Amazon Japan, which were sadly raped by MDA. After that experience, I was rather hesitant to continue expanding my collection by importing more DVDs from Amazon Japan. Also, the costs of Japanese DVDs did not help either. But I still continued anyway. Gurren Lagann was simply too awesome.

Now, this is one hell of an Anime DVD Collection. This belongs to some otaku, NOT me.

Buying anime DVDs is similar to doing drugs. Once you purchase the first volume of a series, instincts to complete the entire series will instantly be engraved within you. Whether you choose to defy it or go together with its flow is totally up to your will. Defying it would leave you with an incomplete collection, which would cause the hearts of many enthusiasts to bleed and ache. On the other hand, going with the flow would make you feel some sense of accomplishment when you finally succeed in completing the DVD collection of a favourite anime of yours, but with that sense of joy also comes the pain and strain on your bank account/wallet. If only they could

It’s time for me to flaunt my first completed DVD collection. I present to you, all 9 first press volumes of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Muhahaha!

Finally, I don’t have the monthly worry about how I would be getting the first press edition of the upcoming volume. I can sleep with more ease now. This might probably be the first and last time I will collect monthly released anime DVDs. The constant thought of first press and special editions running out of stock before I can actually get my grubby hands on them is too stressful for my weak heart.

As for the rest of my collection, there is the limited release of Byousoku 5cm, the limited release of the 10th Detective Conan Movie as well as both seasons of Black Lagoon. I’m lacking a DVD for the first season and 5 DVDs for the second season. I’ll probably take forever to complete this series. Hopefully, a third season emerges soon, and the motivation to complete the series returns. I hope the money to do so comes with it too. Yeah, in my dreams.

I’m desperately longing for the limited releases of Full Metal Panic and Full Metal Panic Fumoffu. The goodies that come together with the DVDs are really tempting, especially for an FMP fanboy. Sadly, my hunt in hotspots such as Akihabara and Nakano were in vain. A complete set of those must be really rare. I wonder if I can ever find a set…

Anyway, since the topic’s anime dvd collection, why not share some of your experiences and encounters along your road as a collector? For example, the first DVD you bought and the feelings you felt, your first series you completed, or even how some diabolical organization such as the MDA in my case, screwed around with your DVDs. I’m sure everyone’s interested to hear about your tale too!

Edit : I think the first picture has been really misleading. No way in the world would I have such a massive DVD collection.

Enjoy your wasted money and lack of support for the localized market.

I only buy DVD’s from my region and with subtitles in a language I understand.

Wow, that’s impressive. I think you’ve spent more in DVDs than I have in savings. I can’t even remember the first DVD I got or when/how I got it.

Caitlin > In case you were thinking that the first picture is mine, it’s not. It’s some massive DVD collection I found on the net.

some japanese and US’ DVDs are very well packaged and comes with all sort of goodies. unlike our local crappy ODEX DVDs with crappy subs that only deserve to be in one place, the dustbin.

Do you actually like rewatch these things?
Back in ye olden days when I burned every anime I watched I never actually rewatched any. in fact most of my burned anime I’m just giving to JP to watch for his “what i was forced to watch this week” column.

Afterwards I plan to throw them all out sine they’re just fansubs/burned CDRs anyway. But with DVDs its like don’t you ever look back and think “I coulda spent my money on something more productive?”

I sometimes feel that way about manga…but recently I’m going back to BookOff and selling a lot of my manga. I used to have as much manga here as you have DVDs but I already sold back at least 50books.

gordon > I only buy R2s if I really want the DVD.

bj0rn > Yea, I paid quite a sum for my Gurren Lagann DVD 1 and 2 Limited Edition.

Hinano > I think you’re mistaken about the first picture. It’s not mine, LOL. My DVD collection is only shown in the last 2 photos. And yea, I don’t rewatch these things, that’s why I selective on what DVDs I buy. I don’t really plan to expand my collection, with the only exception being the Evangelion 1.01 DVD.

i myself have recently become an anime collector of a fair quantity. i am an australian 17, turning 18, year old boy. i have never purchased an anime from a company such as amazon.com. i basically wait until a certain show that tickles my fancy is released in stores here. except for ‘city hunter’, i bought that from some small time shop in sydney. i have 89 full shows (this includes the seasons eg. slayers, slayers next, slayers try and dbz season 2-3) and 65 movies. the first photo image on this page is very impressive and i hope t match it (1 have 18 titles of what he/ she has). this is too long. everyone has my support.
