This Is What Happens When You Read Manga Or Watch Anime In Class

For those of you who are still in school, I don’t know how your classes work but for me, I use my laptop for almost all, if not all my classes. Who needs textbooks when the resources are uploaded online and there’s Google? Anyway, that’s not the point here.

Before I begin on some of the reactions my classmates have, I’ll let you have some background knowledge about my class. I’m in an IT-related course and there are a total of 21 students, 19 guys and 2 girls. The balance totally sucks and I have to go through another 2 more years of this. Out of the 19 guys, there are only 1 or 2 besides me who are higher-leveled appreciators of Japanese animation artforms. The rest either only watch stuff such as Bleach and DGrayMan, or think that Bleach is Hentai and Naruto is buttsecks. The girls don’t watch anime, I think.

Now that you know what the hell’s going on in my class, let’s begin with some of the reactions.

Although I surf other anime blogs and sites in class, I refrain from reading manga digitally or watching anime during lesson time. It’s partially because my laptop has a 2 year old screwed up screen with dead pixels all over the place, and I’m using headphones now instead of the normal earphones that can be discreetly plugged into the ears. What good is anime without the sound? And of course, I hate people looking over my shoulder every 5 minutes, trying to determine what I’m doing and being a disturbance to me.

The other 1 or 2 classmates of mine, however, do what I abstain from, and they apparently get some rather laughable reactions from the others in class.

Take for example, To Love-Ru. Nothing much to be excited about, the fanservice’s just normal, really. My friend who watches it probably thinks so too. We were seated in the middle row of the class with about a quarter of the class sitting behind us. Both the girls were seated in front, so all that’s left behind are hotblooded horny teenagers. They so happened to not be paying attention to the lecturer, and have instead diverted their eyes to my friend’s screen. Words couldn’t describe how excited they got.

With each fanservice scene, their level of excitement leveled up. The lesson ended and we had to move on to the next classroom. Upon entering the new classroom, those guys who were behind us were rushing the row of seats directly behind us for more of the show. It’s only fanservice for goodness sake! What’s wrong with these deprived people?

Maybe I should do them and favour by passing those guys a list of fanservice shows. From how I see it, they’ll probably nosebleed rivers and die of exhaustion.

Another example is the Gantz manga. I think a fault on my part to introduce that same friend to Gantz during class time. After a few chapters, he seemed to have been hooked and began marathoning the series. It’s an established fact that Gantz is NSFW with all the naked boobies running around, but out of all places, he just had to chomp on the chapters in class. I don’t blame him since the lecturer was boring. As usual, we were seated in the middle row, so the guys behind us had an eyeful and commented on how my friend was reading H-mangas in class.

Gantz may have NSFW scenes, it is definitely not a H-manga in my terms. H-mangas are mangas without proper storylines and focus 99% on the screwing, while Gantz focuses mostly on the characters kicking the ass of aliens and sometimes, the characters getting their ass kicked. Gantz’s storyline owns that of any typical shonen series that those guys at the back have ever read or watched, a gazillion times.

The last reaction I used to get was people commenting how I was watching hentai, when I was actually watching stuff such as Ghost in the Shell and Gurren Lagann. How smart. I may have played unclean visual novels and bought and read unclean doujinshi, but I do not watch hentai. It just isn’t my style, so they’re accusing me for something I don’t do. At least do some homework before you start shooting off, noobs.

I can probably think of a line or two to get back at such comments if I use my brain for a bit, but I guess I’m too lazy. I’d rather spend my time watching anime or reading some manga to improve my Japanese. If you have any classic retaliation lines, feel free to share it so that fellow comrades in school have an extra counterattack.

As for me, I’ll stick to watching anime at home, and reading only hardcopy manga in class. I usually cover my manga with a book cover to protect it from scratches, so no one can tell what I’m reading unless they close in on me. Don’t worry though, I own no H-mangas. Just doujinshi which will never leave my room ^^;

I don’t think anyone in my class except for the mentioned friend of mine knows about this blog. Even if my classmates who tried to diss me read this, I don’t really give a damn. What can they do to me anyway? LOL!

I usually only read very “public-friendly” mangas like Yotsubato! when I’m on campus.

As for watching anime, I also try hard not to watch fanservice shows on my ipod touch when I’m travelling. Wouldn’t want the kids sitting behind me or someone else to get a nosebleed. LOL

But in the dark corner of my room …. muahhahaha

  2. 2 Caitlin

I don’t have that luxury, unfortunately. There are days when there’s absolutely nothing to do at the office and my time could be better spent reading something but that’s not allowed. :(

“The girls don’t watch anime, I think.”
Ha ha, this just made me laugh. As for the other guys, you just gotta realize that many people are inferior anime fans.

  4. 4 issa-sa

LOL it proves that guess fanservice shows are still ‘enjoyable’ minus the sound.

  5. 5 gordon

    back then not many people carry laptops to school. if a class gets too boring me and a bunch of friends will just walk out and go to the nearby LAN Shop to play CS. ^^;

  6. 6 MrMayat

@Gordon: True dat. Us students were a poor bunch to afford laptops back in the day. Oh, wait. That’s just me.

alafista > I’ve stopped watching anime on the go simply because it drains my battery too quickly, and I’m too lazy to convert.

    Caitlin > Aww, that’s such a waste.

Os > What’s to laugh about that sentence?

issa-sa > I guess the guys behind me just want the visuals.

gordon > My school is in the middle of nowhere, so there are no LAN shops in the area. There’s an MRT station built just specially for my school though ^^

Most of my anime-watcher-friends are mostly Narutards… even my older
cousin who visits every now and then just to download and watch them… but we still watch Bleach as I am currently watching it too… Don’t think he would watch anything other than those even if I recommend him something… and also, he downloads hentai shows….

double, then u must be from SP. i graduated from SP as well. i was from the school of EEE. the LAN shop i used to visit was at the cinema next to the clemeti bus interchange. when i past by it not long ago, seems like the cninema is already torn down.

Really commend your bravery at watching anime/reading manga in class. I would NEVER do that when I was in an environment filled with a ton of mostly childish-minded buggers like in a Junior College or Secondary School who’s minds are infected by their conservative parents. Your parents must be really remarkable people I must say, coz it took me quite some effort to break through my own parents’ conservative infection while many of my peers have not.

Ok, I wasn’t really into this until after I went into army. Which reminds me. I just read/watched any bloody crap I wanted (including Ichigo Mashimaro and Lucky Star) and I didn’t really care what people said because it didn’t really matter then.

And LOL at your class concentration. My Further Mathematics/Physics in JC class had 25 people, 4 which were girls. One was a swimmer so she wasn’t too bad, but the other 3 were broken down like this:

    1. Favourite hobby is HTML
    2. Swears never to get a boyfriend
    3. Vietnamese scholar who aspires to enter politics

Not exactly as fun as my secondary school days, but hell a lot more fun than army anytime.

  11. 11 euniqueflair

coincidentally, i’ve been reading Gantz manga recently. it is addictive.

  12. 12 double

dKiWi > My secondary school days were spent in an all boys school >_>

euniqueflair > Yup, especially with all the blood and gore flying around.

  13. 13 KesenaiTsumi

swt….boring class… Well too bad I still in secondary school and cannot bring a laptop to school just yet…Hehe…

Maybe I will understand more when I start taking laptop with me…Guess the same things will happen around me.

*And Yeap..Some people just watch Naruto or DGray-man and some even think Naruto is Hentai…Screw those stupid….

  14. 14 kousaka

I generally don’t read anything anime or manga related in class, especially since there are toom many childish people here. On rare occasions though, when its really boring, i read a manga or video game manual on the low.

  15. 15 Asuka

“With each fanservice scene, their level of excitement leveled up.”

LOL. How so? What signs did they exhibit that made you come to that conclusion?

  16. 16 double

Asuka > At the start, they weren’t really looking at my friend’s screen. A few minutes passed and after a couple of fanservice scenes, they started staring the screen intensively and I’m pretty sure I heard some moans of excitement from them. The sounds and intensity of their stares grew with each scene.

  17. 17 OceanMoon

    I feel your pain……..

I am in JC now but I still have retards coming up to me and upon seeing that I am watching anime on my MP4, they would start screaming hentai like small kids. (Though I have some doujins on my MP4 but its not the point.) Others think that Bleach rocks the world and keep playing the Bleach / Naruto songs on their phones.

On the other hand, those people who have some knowledge on anime, were totally different. Everytime there was some fanservice, they would say been there done that. They surf 4chan and stuff so this sort of stuff is no longer new to them but its really irritating for me as I am trying to listen to the anime.

So I guess there are good and bad points about knowing people who watch anime and do not watch anime.

Hehe, I have a similar problem, I’m in poly now, from the school of FMS from Ngee Ann.

Whilst I have the benefit of classmates who really couldn’t care less, mainly ’cause I watch anime with no explicit content during class’s more boring moments (I.e. D.Gray Man, mainly cause I started that series before it became so popular, Code Geass R2, Full Metal Panic Fumoffu! and the like) but do indeed fear to open up an episode of To-Love-RU mainly ’cause judging from their attitude, quite a bit of them’d rail on me as a “HENTAI LOVER ZOMG!!1!!”

True, I have read my share of unclean doujinshi (and keep a few Haruhi ones >.>) I am by no means a Hentai lover…

There are some who are more open and can see To-Love RU is no Hentai production, but that some compared to many.

And I was from a all-boys secondary school too, wasn’t very eventful, except a friend, who pushed F/SN on me, and hence got me kinda started on anime, attended class with me, and everyday I thank christ for that….

  20. 20 Hypertoast

It’s always sad when people think about stuff like that. One time I brought a magazine to the class and there was an atricle on gundam seed in it. One guy in my class wanted to read it and I let him, but then he ended up staring at an ad for Xchange (h game, it didn’t show anythingm but the shot had the giel show quite a bit of clevage). And then people people keep thinking that mange is so full of naked people when it’s only simple series like negima and loveless. I wonder how people will act if they saw some of the more provactive scenes of Air gear (it isn’t even all that bad), they’ll probably start wailing or something.

  21. 21 yumeno

Well, when my non-otaku friend saw me reading this NSFW anime mag, he didn’t mind it at all. He said it was “fake anyway”. I pity those guys in your class lol. Just some panty shots and they get excited.

I doubt I’ll escape this kinds of experience once I graduate from secondary school D:

  22. 22 ReadAnimes

can u give me the name of the firts picture u`ve put.. im not sure where it comes and who put it.. but if u noe please reply me.. im interested in that scenes somehow..

  23. 23 Shadowolf-003

that picture of the two girls that says trouble girls is that the name of the manga/ anime

  24. 24 ignorant wanderer

i’m a girl and i keep an open mind on such things like reading manga or watching anime wherever and whenever. i’m not a hardcore otaku or so to say but i wrap up all my mangas to avoid them getting dirty or cover-wet.
i read mangas and watch anime of various genres. but i am more of reader so it’s mostly manga for me. i’ve read loads of shonen manga but naruto i cannot stand :X
lately i’ve been reading yaoi, sometimes hardcore yaoi just for the fun of it. i’m pretty much used to hardcore smut :P if i were to read in public, i’m positive i’ve got the guts to do it.
just that i’ll be very much aware to my surroundings and make sure it’s only me who’s reading it.
but since i don’t own any smutty mangas, i don’t think it’ll happen.
result?? if i read manga in class, my friends and i would read it together, pass it around ect. sucks enough that comics are not allowed in school =_=
