The Other Otaku In Japanese Class

It was another usual Japanese lesson on Thursday, and we were learning how to use ~とき, where ~ can be either the dictionary form or plain past tense of a verb, an i-adjective, a na-adjective or a noun. After the sensei went through the ways to use it, we had a verbal practice. There was one particular sentence that we had to complete.

「こどものとき、。。。」, which tranlates to “When I was a child, …”. Everyone gave rather standard answers, such as they played a lot or they were very lively.

Then, it came to the other otaku who was sitting at the last row. How do I know he’s of the same species? His handphone rang a couple of times during previous lessons as he somehow forgot to switch it to silent mode. A Clannad fanboy it seems, with his ringtone set as Dango Daikazoku.

Anyway, when it came to his turn, here’s what he said.

「こどものじかん。(Kodomo no Jikan)」. And he stopped right there.

The whole class and the sensei just took it as a mistake in his reading since they didn’t know what that was, and the kanji for ji and toki is the same, 「時」. I was the only one who was laughing away. I could see that he was apparently quite distracted by other thoughts instead of paying attention to the lesson. How could you misread this when 9 of your classmates have just read the same phrase mere seconds ago?

Daydreaming about delicious flat-chested lolis isn’t something to be done in Japanese class. Fellow comrades who are keen on picking up moonspeak, please don’t follow this example.

I hate those kinds of anime fans who are just learning Japanese because they’re stupid like that. It’s a language. Take it seriously.

Whoa, you’re just learning toki? I learned that like in level 1 Japanese.

Everyone > LOL at the comments. Who wants to be the next otaku hero?

Koji Oe > I’m using the textbook Minna no Ninhongo, and the lesson is currently at chapter 23. I know it’s a little slow, so I have self-studied ahead. Now, lessons are like revision for me, and to make sure that I fully understand what’s being taught.

Never heard of ‘kodomo no toki’ before, seems like ‘kodomo no koro’ is more commly used.

Still, though, an amusing tale. Now I need to sign up for some Japanese lessons…
