.Htaccess Is Scary Crap

I was reading up on how to prevent hotlinking, and I ended up screwing up the site when I added a .htaccess file. The result? Only the main page could be viewed. Even after deleting the .htaccess, the permalinks got all screwed up. I started to panic and began searching for solutions. I really need to learn how to stay calm >_>

Once again, this happens during a period where I should be doing much more important stuff, for example, studying for tomorrow’s Applied Cryptography test. Instead, I’m here tinkering and screwing around with wordpress, causing more problems than I already have.

Anyway, thanks to Tami for reminding me that the problem was with the permalinks. I thought for a while, before realising that all I had to do was to refresh the permalink options in the Wordpress dashboard.

Bah, my brain needs to function efficiently in the right way. And I need to stop screwing up stuff.

I think the problem was that you actually deleted the .htaccess file. When you refresh the options in wordpress, wordpress will edit your .htaccess file with the correct instructions for your permalinks.

Depending on how good your host is, you should be able to just toggle hotlink protection in your cpanel instead of coding it yourself (and the cpanel program will edit your .htaccess for you).

I used Dreamhost’s panel options to toggle the hotlink protection, but it just doesn’t seem to work.

What did you write? Email it to me and I can try to help. Before I switched to wordpress, I had worked with my htaccess file for a variety of things, including hotlinking stuff.

I got it off google images. And I didn’t realise it’s the same as yours until you mentioned it.

After my first time messing up with WP, I’ve learned never to play around with it during days when I have classes.

hey Double, I use htaccess to block pesky hotlinkers as well, I can send you a copy of mine if you want it. might be handy as a guide. seeing that your wordpress apache rename is similar to mine it might be easier to custom my old htaccess to work on your page. just drop me an email if you’re interested.
