This Has Got To Be The Most Stylish Evangelion Boxset Ever

NTV’s releasing a new Evangelion boxset with what I think is by far the coolest design ever. Now that’s what I call top quality packaging.

The entire boxset contains all 26 episodes of the entire TV series, a BGM collection consisting of 22 tracks,「EVANGELION:DEATH(TRUE)2」, and NEON GENESIS EVANGELION 01 TEST-TYPE 「残酷な天使のテーゼ」, an exclusively edited full size opening of 残酷な天使のテーゼ.

The standard retail price is stated to be 38995 yen. Also there’s a catch. Since NTV’s releasing it, it’s only an exclusive online mail order. This means that only fans within the country can get their hands on this, and that it sucks to be a fan living overseas.

Complaints aside, let’s take a further look at the design.

There are 3 mini boxes stored within the big box, and it looks like each stores 4 dvds. I like how they labelled the boxes as Evangelion Units. The color scheme for the various boxes match their units too, which is pretty creative.

Compared to previous designs, this release is much more vibrant. The older designs were usually single coloured and plainly designed, thus turning out to look really boring. Even the Evangelion 1.0 limited edition DVD had quite a plain unattractive look, but I still bought it anyway.

This boxset lack in 2 things though.

One, the extras. Previous boxsets had more extras such as production notes and mini booklets, as compared to this one. If I recall well, there was one ancient release of something Evangelion that contained a mini figurine and many other interesting freebies as well.

Two, Blu-ray. With most of the new anime releases coming out in Blu-ray, there’s not really much motivation for fans to purchase normal DVDs. Recent and upcoming Bluray releases aren’t priced much more expensive as compared to their DVD counterparts, so why bother?

Only really hardcore fans would bother getting this. Would I? Probably, if I was living in Japan. But because I’m not, I have an excuse to shun the opportunity of splurging a bomb on REGULAR DVDs. Really, if they were Blu-ray, I’m certain more fans would be willing to fork out their life savings.

If you dead set on getting this DVD boxset, you can do so here. Otherwise, you can join me in the droolfest and lament about how this can only remain eye candy.

    HOLY SHIT. EPIC.

Even if I do go to Japan, this box set would cost me…SGD 300+? (via my shitty mental conversion skills)

But if they were BLU-RAY I would gladly buy a Blu-Ray player, stow away in a transport ship along with my life’s savings to get it.

I know your EVA fanboyism is huge, but near 40k yen huge?

Opinion of a guy who simply likes the series: it doesn’t really look that great, and you’d forget about it in a week or two. No offense intended, of course. ;P

    C.I. > It’s over SGD 500. You fail Math.

Mark > 40k yen is way over my budget. Seriously.

Actually, one of the purposes of this post was to lament about the crappy packaging Evangelion releases have. This one’s the few decent ones.

And yea, I’ll probably forget about it in time to come. Realise how I buy less than 50% of the Evangelion stuff I post on this site? If I did buy everything I posted about, I’d be flat broke >_> There’s just too much merchandise out there, so one has to be selective and purchase only the bare essentials ;P

  4. 4 The Sojourner

Wise double is wise. Stay away from it.

  5. 5 otaku dan

it looks nice but it does not include the two original movies which to me seems like a big turn off

  6. 6 Stifler

I want it, but I’m going to do the smart thing and just look at it.

    orz. I fail math.

That’s even worse, that’s more than my entire temp job’s pay.

  8. 8 pp

wow, looks like a collection of books..

  9. 9 double

The Sojourner > Witty Sojourner is witty.

otaku dan > Yeah, I was wondering why they left out the End of Evangelion and Death and Rebirth.

    Stifler > Alright, you’re droolfest member #561.

    C.I. > LOL

pp > Well, owning such a boxset would make you look less otaku and more intellectual.

  10. 10 pp

not to mention more broke than ever.

  11. 11 suki

Smart yet, lacking in some ways. I guess there’ll never really be a ‘perfect’ box set

this series needs to come out on blu-ray.

didnt they remaster it recently for dvd? surely they still have lying around the things necessary to release that remaster on bluray.
