STCC Day 2: The Camera Is Decent But The User Is Not

Today’s highlight was the cosplay competition, so many came with cameras of all sorts for some snapping.

I failed my camera. It’s pretty decent at taking photos, but my skills just aren’t there. It was only after I got home and did some surfing around the interwebs when I realised that my shutter speed was far too slow as compared to what most people use for indoor shoots.

Now, I have learned that the correct way was to increase the ISO, use the shutter speed a shutter speed somewhere along the lines of 1/60 and make the aperture as large as possible.

There weren’t many cosplayers today, but it couldn’t be helped as the event was supposed to be mainly focused on toys and comics, just as it’s named.

The winner of the cosplay contest was the Hatsune Miku cosplayer. Although I’ve never liked Miku, she was one of the better, if not, best cosplay of the day. I like her armbands which light up.

Besides her, I just took some random shots of the few wandering cosplayers, most which turned out blur due to an error on my part.

If I’m not wrong, this isn’t cosplay

Now I totally understand why some people rant about the increasing population of noobs getting DSLRs. Even I’m quite annoyed with myself for being unable to deliver an acceptable number of decent shots. I’ll have to read up and learn more so that I’ll be able to take better photos at Cosfest 2008 next weekend.

This cosplayer’s pretty sweet looking =D

On a separate note, my sister finally got my mum to subscribe to Animax when they went to the STCC earlier today. She no longer has to squint her eyes like this anymore.

My potraits turned out to be crap too. I hate using fill-in flash. I’m more of a landscape/abstract person.

  4. 4 tj han

    pp > We’re both noobs.

MrMayat > Most of my photos turned out to be crap too.

C.I. > I had many other shots that would have turned out good if there weren’t blurred.

tj han > Yea I asked DM some question today when I met him. By the way, did you come to STCC today?

My photos were worse so yea. I need to figure out better stuff too for Cosfest. Also nice shot of the lolita, she did go up on stage, the black-clothed one, but was not in the final ten. I agree with you, the VK cosplayer was sweet.

Aww.. I need a new DSLR camera to get some pretty good shots, especially under dim lightings..

Great jobs on getting those shots Double.. ^^

maybe it’s just me but this is the 1st time i see so many people with DSLRs in one place.

as for shooting technics, fear not. make windbell walk the plank to a pool of hungry goldfishes until he taught u everything.

  9. 9 C.I.

    @ Gordon: LOL @ Goldfish.

Hoprfully I can figure out my failcam by cosfest. orz

  10. 10 Kippei

Under low light event, you need either a wide aperture lens or a flash unit or both. I seen you have F5.6 for all the shot on your Sony, in this aperture a external flash unit is a must IMO. Your ISO setting low too. Use 400 - 800

  11. 11 Inuran

Kippei > Thanks for some of the pointers you gave me. Now I think I’ve got a slightly better view in the world of photography.

gordon > I was overwhelmed by the DSLRs too. Even kids were welding them =o

  14. 14 Soshi

oh man, your post-title makes me feel bad for making that comment on my blog. :\

  15. 15 Hynavian

I’m having difficulty identifying the characters whom the cosplayers are cosplaying for the Vampire Knight outfit. O_o

The images are clear enough though, better than my handphone camera pictures that will turn out blur and such. You’ll get better in photography! (:
Disclaimer: Hynavian is no pro in photography either, she just hit the “take” button on instinct. XD

  16. 16 Inuran

    Oh, thanks~!

    My personal album is under

Soshi > No need to feel bad. It’s a fact after all.

Hynavian > I have no idea who the character is in the last image.

Inuran > You’re welcome, and I’ve linked to your site.

  19. 19 Squee

Double, your pics aren’t that bad. I’ve had my DSLR for almost a year and I’m still a noob learning from experienced users.
You should join one of our figure shoots in the future ^^

  20. 20 double

Squee > I should, but first, I need to have the time >_>
