Otaku Newspaper Interview

Sometime ago, Windbell, Soshi and I were interviewed by a local reporter, Wendy, who writes for a publication targeting secondary schools, titled Friday Weekly. It was only until this Friday when the article was published.

The title reads: “We have been misunderstood!”

It’s all in Chinese, so sorry to those who don’t understand it. My Chinese isn’t great either, and I took quite a while to read through the entire thing. Translating everything would be out of the point, since I’d probably get half the translations wrong. Yet strangely, I can watch Chinese subs without much problem. LOL!

Miho and Bangin are featured in the article too, cosplaying as Haruhi and Kyon respectively. The group photo brings back the memories of the phootshoot we had when Windbell and I were in Tokyo in April. Those were fun times, and I’m looking forward to a chance in the near future to do a photoshoot of their cosplay, or even join them as a cosplay partner, if possible.

I still remember how I detested reading Chinese newspapers when I back in secondary school. Never would I imagine myself buying a copy on my own accord.

I was quoted, with a Nekomimi Konata beside it

Instead of saying that we are obsessed with otaku culture, why not say that it’s an interest of ours, something that we like doing, a topic that we like “researching” about.

Since the readers are mostly, if not all, secondary school students, this article will be pretty much under the radar of those beyond the targeted readers’ age. I wonder how many students actually read the Chinese newspapers that the school subscribes to on their behalf. I left the weekly papers unread, and so did my classmates.

Getting interviewed was quite fun since it was my first time. Also, this is the first, and probably the last time that I will ever appear on a news publication. Not that it actually matters, since getting on the papers isn’t always something good, I think.

By the way, Gordon was quick in posting up this article. I bought a copy on Friday, but I never got the time to go through it until moments ago. Darn those dastardly school assignments.

    i bet bleachies and narutards will be thinking “Which animes are this from?!” It’s time those narutards and bleachtards get the wake-up call that there are BILLIONs of animes out there that are better than those 2 shows

    YOU ARE FAMOUS ONCE AGAIN.

  3. 3 Lss

    was this the one you guys talked about a while back?

    i dont fully agree with their 3 criteria for being otaku though.

    you could make a living from this and yet still be otaku, 2nd pt was pretty pointless imo, 3rd pt well not everyone really wants to stand out and …….

    on the bright side it does try to portray the whole culture in a good way rather than play up the erm hikki neet hentai ecchi aspects.

    Tiny Red Man > LOL, hopefully there’s such an effect when they read this article.

    C.I., Fariz Asuka > This isn’t being famous.

    Lss > Those 3 points weren’t stated by us. Even the article already states that it wasn’t by us.

    Kozta-Boom > Thanks.

    tj han > Haha, real life Genshiken FTW. Anyway, I cut my hair recently, so I no longer have the same hair style as Madarame.

    gordon > I can expect “HEY IT’S THAT OTAKU FROM FRIDAY WEEKLY! GET HIM!”

    @gordon

    Regarding allowing your post to have an image tag on otaku.fm, how do you do that?

  11. 11 Panther

    Sojourner: Just put an image up on your post and leave it near the top, then have your blog feed set to full (and show image if any such option) if you are using Blogger (not sure if Wordpress has this option). Not sure about Wordpress though, you have to ask someone skilled in Wordpress for that, because I am pretty sure the !-more has something to do with it.

    @Panther

    Thanks anyway! I have asked Kumo before but I did not really get it. Think I will try his advice one more time later.

    @Double: On a side note, how come your article came out so late, its been almost a month by my count.

  14. 14 double

    C.I > No idea. I think they had scheduled feature articles before this, hence the one month.

  21. 21 don777

    Ummm, I can’t understand the contents of this newspaper article.

    But I can realise you’re recognized a one of the big name Otakus in SG bloggers!

  22. 22 double

    don777 > It’s basically an example of otakus in Singapore, and we just happened to be interviewed as those examples. I believe that it isn’t really an accurate portrayal though, since I think that we aren’t hardcore a single bit.
