20th Century Boys Live Action Movie

Earlier this afternoon, I managed to catch the movie at the cinema in Canal City Hakata. I was actually planning to do a post on Ooita first, but it’ll be better if I did this first while it’s still fresh in my mind.

Before I even begin on the movie, I have to comment that the tickets are ridiculous wallet rapers, even Krauser II would be put to shame. 1,800 yen for a normal non-discounted ticket. Thankfully, my student pass works for the student discount of 300 yen, even in Japan. Hurray!

In case you were wondering, that’s me 6 years ago.

This was my second time at a Japanese cinema, and unlike the first, this cinema was much better. At least the air-conditioning was decent, and the seats were rather comfy.

I’m actually keen on spoiling those who have yet to watch the movie, since I approve of spoilers. However, no matter how I look at it, there’s simply nothing much to spoil if you’ve already read the manga. That’s how faithful it is to the original. However, many of the parts were compressed, such as Occho’s adventures in Thailand. I was looking forward to the scenes where he kicks ass, as well as the parts when he trained under the monk, but the latter didn’t appear.

Despite the movie sticking to the manga, there isn’t much spectacular stuff about it. The CG was just average, or even below average. In my opinion, the only praiseworthy aspect the movie possesses is its cast. It’s as if the characters crawled out from the manga into our world. Not only are their looks similar, their personalities too. This alone, is a crucial factor that salvages the lack of fancy eye-catching stuff we see in most live action movies.

One thing to celebrate is Kana’s 10 seconds of spotlight at the end of the movie. I so wanted to yell out like a fanboy when she ripped off Friend’s poster, but eventually decided against it.

This movie is definitely going to many other countries besides Japan. I already saw some advertisement posters of the movie in Singapore, so I’m guessing it’s going to be released real soon. Maybe I’ll watch it again.

For those who are already fans of the manga, this is a must-watch. For those who have yet to read the manga, I strongly urge you to catch in once it’s out in your area. Seriously, who can withstand the charm of 20th Century Boys? My only guess is the moe-blob lover gang.

Finally, it’s only common sense to stay behind after the credits begin for the trailer. At least it’s there when it’s screened in Japanese cinemas. Hopefully, Movie 2’s to be released on 31st Janauary 2009, and judging from the trailer, the excitement only heightens. I can’t wait.

What the…? Is there some sort of “student pass exchange policy” between Singapore and Japan, or something? (Liar, damn picture says: “Issue Date 07/04/2007″ what are you, shota or something? XD)

Oh, the movie’s coming out on 16th Oct in Singapore.

Just wondering: how popular is the 20th Century Boys film (compared to, say, Detroit Metal City)?

Movie ticket prices ehre are a bitch, which is why I only go on the 1st or the 10th when the local cineplex discounts the prices to 1000yen… which is still like what, 5 times the price of a ticket back home?

TP > I don’t play by the rules of the system :P

Anyway, I’m thinking that both are equally popular.

iss-sa > Yea, and to think I always complained that tickets back in Singapore were expensive….

phossil > You mean the student pass discount?

I love the manga, but since I live in America, I can’t watch the movie. Plus I can’t read Japanese. ._. This sucks.

I really want to watch it. D’:
