After Playing Macross Ace Frontier For A Couple Of Hours…

I decided to review it.

I don’t own a PSP, so I don’t get it contact with all the fun games released for it. Hence, when Macross Ace Frontier was released not too long ago, I didn’t have a chance to try it out. That is, until school reopened for the new semester.

A classmate of mine happens to have obtained an open-source copy of the game, and during our breaks in school, he would kindly lend it to the pathetic PSP-less soul, also known as me. He’s the only one in my class who reads this blog on a regular basis, so maybe I should show my gratitute by uploading a picture of him playing Maross Ace Frontier on his PSP!

I kid.

Anyway, I must say that Macross Ace Frontier’s addictive. You get to choose missions for 4 series; the original Macross, Macross 7, Macross Zero and Macross Frontier. With each mission, a song related to the series is featured and looped over and over again until you complete the mission, run out of time, or get your ass owned by the enemies. The game usually ends the third way for me.

The dogfights are interestingly fun, although my complain is that the camera view. You can only see what you have targeted, so if you are locked on an enemy who’s behind you, you have to switch targets or you’ll be unable to look in front. This, however, can be easily overcome through hours and hours of getting used to the game play.

With each mission you complete, you’ll unlock new Valkyrie models and other series related mechas as well. There’s even the Vajira which you can use in some missions too. You can select the ride of your choice for yourself and your partner, as well as to customize the stats and design of your mecha.

The graphics are quite awesome for a PSP game, and there’s no need for any comment about the music if you love Macross songs. I keep blasting songs such as ライオン and 射手座☆午後九時Don’t be late, since it doesn’t seem like there are any Ranka songs.

So far, I’ve played a little of the original series missions, some Macross 7 missions and some Macross Frontier missions. Within the short time I’ve played the game in, I’ve learnt that this game is all about flying around and spamming homing missiles like there’s no tomorrow. If you like listening to good music while spamming projectiles, this game is definitely for you.

Sadly, I don’t own a PSP. Or any other portable console. I must really get that NDSi once it’s available, or even a NDS lite, to ease some boredom and add some fun to my travelling time and breaks in school.

Technically even in the Anime it was all about spamming homing missiles as well.

Well, except in 7, that was all about music and Basara’s fashion sense.

I cant believe you managed to play and review it before ME!!!….Just kidding..:)

I cant wait to grab this for my PSP. It reminds me of several gundam games mechanics and Galaxy Angel series as well….

Disregarding the pathetic lack of Ranka songs, this game was the most fun I had on the handheld in a while. I tend to be partial to games based on anime which I’ve watched. Too bad the Gundam 00 game’s on the PS2; I’ve not touched that old black dog in forever.

    C.I > Barasa is a weirdo.

Toonleap > A classmate of mine who had almost zero knowledge of anime mecha actually thought that I was playing Gundam.

Shin > I was really hoping for some Ranka songs D=

@Double’s reply to Toonleap: Which just goes to show how mainstream Gundam has become in society. Even those who don’t watch anime know of it.

Macross Missle Massacre. That’s what the Americans call missile spamming. In the second PSX Macross game(can’t remember the title), I mainly used the rifle instead of spamming missiles.

The Nintendo DSi’s a great thing, but Nintendo should bring out more games for it…

I got my Nintendo Dsi in black, but now I regret taking the black one.
