Shuuya in Battle Royale is not cool, charismatic or heroic like in the manga and the novel because of the scipt. You can watch from 1:45

It’s different from heroism in the original story.He is naive and sensitive but will be moved by the intensity of the reality he has to confront” quoted from the director of Battle Royale.
I have to admit that I am a fan girl but I don’t blindly praise his acting. I think that his Raito lacks intelligence, arrogance, and composed facade which are the essence of Raito’s characteristics. However, in my opinion he did a pretty good job in the Raito’s dying scene.
After watching Kaiji anime, I hope that Fujiwara Tatsuya will do a better job than in Death Note
