I think in most movies and shows for some reason they live in a world where the zombie genera of films does not exist, hence why they always are confused at the nature of what is going on until they get gobbled up. However, I think that most people in the Western world would be alerted instantly at the zombie outbreak and that they were zombies and would have no qualms with killing them. Interesting thought though, I wonder who would win... I guess it depends what type of zombies they are... slow and shuffly, or those scary as f*** running zombies.

There's a simple reason (a few in fact) why characters in movies/tv whatever would not just go on a killing rampage of Zombies. and Neither would you probably unless you're a paranoid sociopath.

First off, you're biologically coded to not want to kill members of your own species, a fresh Zombie would hardly look like an enemy until you saw either their cold features or rotting flesh (and a fresh zombie would have an open wound at most). While the line "They're human beings!" Seems stupid to you at first consider: you started watching on the pretense there would be zombies, you're expecting it, the character is not.

Secondly, even if you saw a number of people either walking down the street or in your general direction and you're alone, unless you can smell the decomp, you're probably only going to get curious as to where everyone is going, and not think "I must KILL to survive"

Thirdly, Some people do in fact give a shit about fellow man, even if it seemed impossible to find a cure or a fix, people like that would still exist.

You appear to have the mentality that you'd know exactly when an invasion would occur, when in reality you'd probably be like the rest of society and be in panic. a Freeze mechanism when scared is natural, hesitation happens, though skittishness is a better instinct.

The best anti-zombie weapon is the chainsaw.

Army of Darkness. Who can ever forget that show? It's freaking awesome!

[rant]

I've been thinking a lot about zombie physiology. What drives the zombies' state of mind and its biology?

A lot of it has been about influences from John Romero films, 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later and non-cheesy zombie films (except Shawn of the Dead, that's another funny zombie-related film). And my hypothesis is this:

It has got to do with a viral infection to the human host. While it's implausible to think that zombies can be produced in a lab (zombies "exists" in Haiti as a semi-conscious state of alertness), the idea of zombie films is that through evolution and deliberate manipulation by unknown parties, the virus can somehow produce a "perfect DNA sequence" to trigger a zombie-like state.

It turns the hosts onto itself: first it changes the nerve endings of the host, so that pain is inhibited. It then turns onto other neighbouring cells. Cancer cells manifest because of the change in DNA preventing autolysis. The mind has turned feral, and the remaining stored energy from the liver and fat cells are being cannibalized by all cells to ensure survival. Hence the pallid and decrepit look on the zombies.

The only reason it attacks humans is because of the similar makeup. Oh, human beings are also the most nutritious meats in the world (which makes you wonder how "nutritious" you are). So inevitably the zombies will look upon humans as the most immediate source of energy (considering that at some point, zombies will eventually die off due to starvation, at which the cells will start attacking each other for survival).

IKnight > I guess those dumb characters just don't watch TV, or movies either.

Blowfish > You're a true friend indeed. Be sure that I'll smash your skull too if you ever become zombified ^^

Stifler > Chainsaws are dumb weapons. They produce loud noise which will attract more zombies, uses a shitload of power, and is heavy.

phossil > Just close your eyes and start killing away.

The best anti-zombie weapon is the chainsaw. Everyone knows that.

"Zombies are no longer human. "
That's not your mother anymore! Show no mercy!

Its odd but i guess we cant help it.
Ill be glad to smash your skull if youre ever zombified.Isnt that true Friendship? ^^

Besides, we're by now all very zombie-aware because of all the films, books, manga &c that feature zombies. I'm always surprised when I see a zombie movie and the characters fail to twig that the zombies are, well, zombies - haven't they seen any of examples of the kind of movie they're in?
