With Left 4 Dead released not too long ago, my classmates and I had a conversation regarding it. We already have 3 people in the class who own original versions of the game, with a few more to join in after our upcoming tests end. However, there was this particular guy who got on my nerves when he went around asking if anyone could let him install the game using their Steam account. He wanted to play the game but wasn’t willing to fork out any cash for it.

Now, I’m not condemning the act of getting games through other means besides purchasing. The population of people who obtain all their games via official purchases is limited. There are simply too many games out there to play, while money is the limiting factor. Personally, I don’t own all the games I have. However, I do support game companies by actually making purchases of games that I love.
The thing with unofficial cracked games is the common presence of bugs. If the original game itself has hordes of bugs, it’s totally normal to expect double or triple the number of bugs in cracked versions, such as game crashes and errors.
This brings us to the next point of gamers who complain. I don’t mind gamers who complain about portions the game after spending money on it. They have paid their dues, and thus have the right to do so. However, there are the so-called “gamers” who get their games without forking out a single buck, yet complain about how it keeps crashing or the limitations they face. These guys piss me off to no end. An example would be the losers who play on private servers for World of Warcraft. You’re complaining about something you didn’t even pay for? Bloody cheapskates who aren’t willing to fork out for your own entertainment and enjoyment.
The next but similar type of “gamers” who I detest are the kind who don’t even bother putting in the slightest effort to obtain their own unofficial copy of a game. When it comes to those games that require the official copy to access online content, these guys usually just try to leech off friends who possess an original copy. If they are lucky enough to have nice friends, they can successfully leech on an account. No one ever leeches off my account though, since I’m nasty when it comes to such matters.
I met one such person while I was slaying zombie. In the beginning, he could play with us online, but often had problems such as his game crashing. Eventually, Steam went down hard on the cracked versions, and currently, he can’t play with us online now. I suggest that he purchases official copy for 50 odd bucks instead of trying other ways to play for free. Why make life so difficult for yourself?

I have no idea how this fits, but I just wanted to insert this in
I really love the line that rebuts my question of why such “gamers” don’t support the original game. “It’s so expensive, I’ve got no money!” It makes me laugh so hard each time I hear that. Take my classmate for example. Wow, you can spend almost a hundred bucks on booze, the entrance fee and the taxi fare each time you go clubbing, but not half that amount on a game which can last you for years? Now, that is some supreme logic that far surpasses my reach. You are a fucking genius!
To add on, there’s this really brilliant guy in my class who commented that it’s not worth spending money on games such as Left 4 Dead or World of Warcraft. If this smartass was some guy whom I didn’t know, I would probably have accepted his comment by thinking that he has better stuff to spend his money on, like cigerattes, booze and whores. But no, I had known this guy for a year and a half, and it’s a well-known fact that he plays the dumbest game known to Mankind, ever. Even Solitare’s a much better game.

Maplestory. You don’t want to know how hard I laugh each time I hear him talking about it. Want to know what’s the best thing? He buys prepaid cards. Yes, that’s right, you didn’t read it wrongly. He buys god-knows-what in a 2D, PVP deprived game played only by young dumb girls and equally retarded desperados determined to hook up with them through in-game marriage, with cold hard cash. The amount he spent on those dumb cards since he began the game years ago is appalling. Do note that that’s coming from someone who used to play WoW for over a year without any complains regarding the price.
This isn’t even being about cheapskate anymore. It’s about failing standards. If I had to sit down in front of any Windows desktop with only Maplestory installed, forced to play a game on the desktop, you can be assured that you’ll see me opening a Minesweeper window. Someone needs to conduct rehabilitation for those who perform an epic failure when it comes to the choice of gaming.
Alright, now that I’ve raged my tiny bit on the variety of “gamers”, anyone up for reducing the undead population?
P.S. I should really have a part 2 regarding “people who claim to be “fans” of an artiste when all they possess are digital copies. Fans indeed.

Isn’t it a bit hypocritical raging on these so-called cheapskates when you yourself are one?
Even more so about people complaining about games with bugs. Because you’re doing the same thing. Only with people instead of ‘features’.
And as for Bear Calvary…
ROLL 1D20 FOR BEAR LORE.
I like that facepalm. It’s pretty awesome.
Actually, for single player games, it’s pretty much fine… but Multiplayer is another case. (not that I’m encouraging it anyway)
However, I’ve got to admit, the MapleStory part is really true. I sometimes do wonder why did (includes me) people spend hundreds of dollars just to get some special effects in the game. However, props to the Nexon, they do know how to earn their money.
By the way, that banner you’ve placed up (maplestory) is quite an irony xD.
Drm > At least I do buy games. Read the second paragraph. I’m talking about those buggers who aren’t willing to fork out any money to buy any game. One of my classmates is an example. He constantly games, but all the games he has aren’t purchased official copies.
As for the bugs I’m talking about, it’s more of the bugs that come together only with the cracked versions, such as crashes and errors that occur simply because the cracked versions, are well… unofficial.
It don’t matter none if you buy the games or not. You are still complaining about people choosing to do the wrong thing.
Especially when you have done something similar yourself.
And as for cracks, well…
Sometimes, there’s no other way to do it.
I don’t think companies should penalioze people who buy their stuff, but if they do so, well…
This being an anime blog and all I suppose it’s fair to extrapolate this entry in that direction. So…..
How much original anime DVDs do you own?
Bear Cavalry >>>>>> Maple.
DrmChsr0 > I’ve already stated that I’m not ranting about the issue of people downloading. Everyone downloads, that’s a fact. I’m ranting regarding the issue of people who refuse to buy ANY games or putting effort into supporting the game companies in any way.
Alastorflame > Since I only buy Japanese region 2 dvds, my collection is limited to only 20 odd dvds. Still, it’s much better than buying nothing. The main issue here is about the people who refuse to fork out money to support the industry.
Haha, Maplestory looks like the stupidest shit ever.
I’m with you 100%.
Yes, you should definitely buy Left 4 Dead to support Valve. Well, as long as you like the game at least.
BUY FALLOUT 3 COlLECTORS EDITION!!! RAWR!
GAME RAGE!
Got money buy no money download lor. its a free world.
One of the reason of buying original games for me, is that I’d feel compelled to finish the game, by any means necessary
I’ll be glad to play a round or two of L4D with you, add me on steam, my user’s Noviceotaku.
Me and my friends have a system whenever someone buys an original game they will share it with all the other and in games like MMO’s we usually pay the monthly fee together. This way we do not leech each other we support a bit the companies.
Hehe… I’m sure you had a field day in the wastelands.
Actually, I’ve not kept in touch with the newer games that’s out there, considering I’ve invested less time in purchasing those games. (Plus, I’m in no rush to upgrade my Aspire T180 desktop, so I’m pretty much a laidback person.)
However, we can’t put on a moral high ground here: I have to concur with Drmchsr0 because objective moralism translates to all levels of activities we do in life, including anime shows we watch. This is but a matter of philosophy, so please. Enjoy your game.
School’s but a playground: you get beaten hard, but that’s how life teaches you anyway.
Just because people who spends money on other stuff different from you makes them dumb? For all we know, the games that you paid playing can be pretty much fucked too
Well, Ill agree on the fact that there are people who Pirate. BUT! When it comes to those who shamelessly DIE DIE want to LEECH, or those BLOODY COMPLAIN KING. Those deserve to DIE, and really DIE IN HELL. Its like people pirating WC3 just to play DOTA, then COMPLAIN DOTA SUX coz they got PAWNED or MAPHAXXORED.
An easier way to put it is those who like the game, go get an original and play it if you can afford it. I strongly believe that L4D will last quite a long way.
nb > Well, it’s a fact that Maplestory is dumb. Of course you can try to prove me wrong by showing evidence that buying prepaid cards for Maplestory is much worthy as compared to paying for games such as WoW or L4D.
I would most likely fall under the poor gamers category more than anything else. Also, Penguin Army >>>>> Bear Cavalry.
Hello there, I have been frequenting your blog very often and I always find your entries really interesting and easy to relate to =D
Anyway, I don’t think I’m a cheapskate gamer. I buy games that I love, merchandise included (e.g. Dungeon Siege, Final Fantasy VII, Neverwinter Nights) True, there’s just too many games out there and I believe that not everyone’s able to afford that whole lot of wonderful games in the market (while others’ probably NOT even available in the stores).
Totally hate those who want things for FREE… and want it to be bug-free too. I believe spending money buying the actual game would be a lot better than sitting there complaining every single day about every single problems you’re facing with a cracked version. Personally I would occasionally download games to try them out but when things just didn’t work out the way it’s supposed to be, I would just trash it into the bin and look for another. HOWEVER.. I have to admit that there are times when I really felt like ranting my heart out. There’s this Chinese game that I have been looking around for years (I have the original one but the disc got scratched i could no longer play it)… it’s no longer available in the market.. no longer on sales at online stores either. So downloading’s the only way to get it. After having downloaded the game 6 times from 6 different places.. I wanted to give up. None of them worked. *faints*
And LOL at any gamer who claims Maplestory as the BEST game ever. My classmates are trying hard to hack into the school wireless system to play WOW while we have a bunch of juniors hacking into the school wireless system just to play Maplestory.. and they are what? Games Design students. If they seriously think MS is the BEST game ever.. I honestly should just tell them straight into the face that they don’t belong here. (I’d been playing MS for 3 years and frankly speaking, for the whole 3 years, I never once enjoyed my online life cos every other day there’s always a nuisance in-game). I officially quit a year ago and find myself at ease. No more witnessing of kiddies attempting to pick a fight over something so small. No more dealing with young bimbo girls bragging about how much A-cash they have bought.
its all personal preference, I don’t think you should insult games that others personally really enjoy, let be it WoW or maplestory
Shin > Only because of Lelouch.
A.L > I assume you’re from a Polytechnic? If so, which one? I’d like to see which school has game desgin students that adore Maplestory.
Endless > I’m only insulting just because it’s Maplestory, and majority of Maplestory gamers irritate me to no end. Talk to me about any other game and you wouldn’t hear a word of insult from me.
Hello there =P I’m from SP. I wouldn’t say the whole batch of juniors… maybe a few (cos I caught them playing during lessons.. I can understand if you’re playing Dota cos i used to do that too.. but MS? LOL)
OMG THAT’S MY SCHOOL!
I have some friends in the game design course, and they have decent taste in games. Hence, I thought majority of the guys in the course would be the same
Sadly, I was one of those Maplers… in those dark days long ago.Fortunately, not gaming anymore
Well… for now…
Haha ^^ nice, is there a section to follow the RSS feed
