I just came back from the test not too long ago, and I must say that while it’s definitely passable, I don’t think I can get an awesome score. Awesome meaning 380 and above.

This is what I was doing more than half the time during the Grammar section
I’ve to admit that I didn’t study much apart from doing whatever pass year papers my Japanese teacher gave out in class. While most, if not all of my classmates were busy mugging for today’s test, I was caught up with playing Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead. I just wasn’t in the mood to study, especially right after my test week which was concluded on Friday.
Putting aside how much I’ve studied, here’s a breakdown of the 3 sections.
Vocabulary: This section was rather easy as compared to all the past year papers I’ve did. With only 2-3 questions that got me thinking, hopefully, I should get at least a 95% for this portion.
Listening: This section was a little screwed up, since the next few classrooms began the CD playback at different times. I could hear question 1 when the playback in my class was already at question 3. That was quite a distraction, especially when it came to the last few questions. Bah, I need to train my multi-tasking skills by watching anime, listening to music and reading manga all at the same time.
Grammar: I’ve got around 5 out of the 50 questions that had me pondering. While I faced those questions, I regretted not reading through my notes yesterday. Besides that, this section was fine, except for the timing. 70 minutes is too long. I began sleeping after 30 minutes into the paper.
I think I should be able to manage at least a 360, but then again, nothing’s final until I receive my certificate in March 2009. Until then, it’s a break for me until Janauary next year before I begin on my JLPT2 preparation course.
So, for the rest of you out there who have taken your JLPT this year, how did you find it?
P.S. I was so bored during the last section that I actually thought of a brilliant post to enhance the dorama tj_han has ignited. Stay tuned!
Man, all you young kids are scoring too high. XD
Don’t worry double. I only got a shitty 363 for JLPT 3, lowest among all that I know.
Anyway I had JLPT 1 today, and I once again for the second time in a row, fell asleep during listening.
Waiting for drama. Drama is always good.
Oh man!! You applied for the JLPT3!! meanwhile Im still thinking in the TOEFL..haha..
It was manageable, hopefully I can get the certificate. (:
The worse section was the listening because I’m hearing echoes from the classes everywhere. I’m seated at the back of the classroom (near the door) and there’s a lot of distraction coming from the player next door. Once I zoink, that’s it!
Wow…I wonder if I can pass JLPT3 even if I tried…don’t really write much japanese these days.
Soshi > How much did you score for level 3?
LianYL > How the heck did you fall asleep during the most important component where you had to pay the most attention?
phossil > I don’t have to take TOEFL, since our first language in Singapore is English.
Hynavian > I think you’ll do fine =D
blauereiter > But it’s all MCQs, so you shouldn’t have a problem.
I took JLPT3 too. But it’s different for me cause I didn’t manage to sign up for the Intermediate Japanese class… and only managed to grab some notes off a friend a few days before the JLPT. orz
I took it in DC. I bombed the listening. I was so hung over that my brain wasn’t working. I was trying to write down all the info for each question & got distracted when important words came up. I also didn’t write down notes for most of the answers, so ended up guessing when the answer I expected didn’t come up. One question I’m pretty sure I got wrong and 2 or 3 others I have no confidence in.
For the rest of the test, of all the questions that made me think, I only got 3 or 4 wrong. If I somehow passed the listening, I think I did well overall. Otherwise I’m pretty sure the other 2 sections should be enough to pass me.
I thought closing my eyes was a good way to listen better. But they got too comfortable.
D: Much lower than anyone here. LOL. I took it like, 5 days after my last A Level paper and totally didn’t study for it – well, that’s what I say in order to comfort myself XD
Hi Dude,
I think I was sitting next to u, to your left. Were you wearing a white t-shirt, wearing glasses and sort of a spiky hair-do?? U in the 2nd row, with the 1st seat being occupied by that hot babe??
Alf > Nope. There was no one on my left that day. It was an empty seat.
IMO drug tests shouldnt be allowed
