I know how some anime fans have been saying this Winter’s going to be a crappy anime season, and I thought so too. That is, until I realised that I’ve been looking from the wrong perspective.
I find this inspiring
As mentioned before, when i first began anime, I picked up just about any series that I might have the slightest bit of interest in. However, it wasn’t long before I learned more about myself having a really short attention span. I lose interest really easily. One moment, I could be raving about something’s awesomeness, and the next thing I know, my interest for it has died. I do not have the habit of actually blogging about every single anime I watch each season, but I clearly understand how the limits of my attention span can reduce a fairly decent season into one series weekly.
It’s strange how some matters are so simple, yet people can’t get them. For me, it was the concept of “Quality over quantity”.
All this while, I’ve been judging anime seasons based on the number of series I would follow. However, I realised that I found myself happier and deriving much more enjoyment watching less anime weekly, as compared to how I used to start off a season with many series, like double or even triple the current number, only to find myself eventually dropping almost everything, or struggling to continue on just for the sake of finishing the series, even when my passion wasn’t there anymore.
I guess less just might be more for me. I would rather wait weekly for one or two new episodes that I really love instead of tackling a weekly rush of series, most of which I might have little or almost no passion for. I prefer my passion concentrated on something that I really like, rather than spreading it out over a series of things that I may have a much lesser interest in. I’ve grown to hate watching for the sake of watching.
Anyway, enough of my little rambling. This season, besides Major season 5, which I enjoy every single moment of, I’ve only viewed 3 other anime series; Viper’s Creed, Rideback and Kurokami. Viper’s Creed and RIDEBACK were for the mechas, though it I probably won’t bother about Viper’s Creed any further. Rideback is interesting, the mecha’s slick and the quality’s there too, so it’s the second and probably the last on my list of anime I’ll complete this winter. Kurokami didn’t exactly impress me much except the brief fight sequence which made me go “Wow!” a little. If the plot develops well, and the fights maintain or surpass the pilot episode’s quality, I think I’ll continue it.
Pathetic list, some might say. But think of it this way; Some people prefer spreading their love over a harem, while some just want a single person whom they can concentrate their affection on. Alright, that wasn’t exactly the best analogy, but I think you can get what I’m trying to state.
So, what kind of an anime watcher are you?
I agree with you concerning “quality over quantity”, and I too have been judging seasons by the number of series I was watching - in retrospect, it’s pretty wrong. Sometimes, a season with only two series I watch can be very fulfilling because these two shows were brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable, while the last season had quite a lot of interesting shows, but nothing mindblowing for me.
This season is a really good one for me too, now that I have watched Rideback (oh, how I love it already). I hope this will stay like this!
What you really want is quantity of quality but, of course, that rarely happens.
And it seems everybody has everything to praise about Ride Back. I seriously can’t wait to watch it
I just try to keep it simple; If it’s good, then I’ll watch it. I don’t really go for watching crappy anime, simply because it’s anime. Well, not anymore at least.
But yeah, winter is usually a dry season for me, but there’s a few titles I’m looking out for: Rideback, Natsume Yuujinchou season 2, Birdy Decode 02, and Minami-ke Okaeri. Aside from Rideback, all the others are sequels.
I still got enough from the Fall season to tide me over anyway (Xamdou, Soul Eater, Casshern Sins, Mitchiko to Hatchin).
Well… There will always be a gem for every season, I think. I am glad you found yours.
I guess I do not judge by the number of series I watch, just by what I felt might interest me at the start, then I will give them a first episode to at least try them out. Though nowadays I generally find that I have less to start out with for each new season, and hopefully that is a good thing.
I tend to just select a few quality series rather than watch a lot. It maximises enjoyment and saves time. BTW rideback ROcks!!!
I usually wait till some reviews are out. This way I can picture how bad or good a show is according common perception.
Might not sound too strange coming from me, but I actually see what 4chan has to say about it. Usually from the accompanying hype comes hate from certain quarters, though having everyone getting involved in the discussion makes it worth a look at least. Maria Holic this season so far for me.
Same here, now I’m just waiting patiently for the weekly Maria-sama ga Miteru and Maria+Holic episodes. I do give other series a try only if I have the time but since school started, it’s tough. :\

bounen no xamdou (from the creators of eureka seven) is my fave anime I am following atm, not sure if it is a “this winter anime” but i am almost finished it. I am also watching kurokami and have seen up to the latest episode (10 atm). The dialogue story line and central characters are all really shit, I dont suggest following it too seriously, maybe something to do in boredom when all things are lost.

Michiko to Hatchin
All of these are awesome, at least check out a youtube 3 min vid of one of them. Koukaku no Regios if you are into fighting monsters. Shikabane if u are into hot girls fighting monsters. Michiko to Hatchin if you like Cowboy Bebop (not saying its from the same creator I havnt looked into it, but the style is damn similar)
