SOY 09

I missed last year’s SOY, so I figured I might as well go down this year to check it out, and at the same time, complete my transactions with those who expressed interest in my figurines and coffee. Having everything in a single venue sure was convenient.

I present to you, the worst cosplay photos I have ever taken with a DSLR. The venue was outdoors, and even with the ample sunlight, my photos still look like crap. Geez, I think I should find myself a new hobby that doesn’t involve any form of sophisticated technology. Like knitting.

Apparently, after this image, I went to adjust some settings in the menu, and I think I must have changed the aspect ratio from 3:2 to 16:9 by mistake. That explains why some of the shots after this might look a little weird, especially the landscape shots. I doubt I’d ever try shooting in 16:9 again, at least for cosplay shots.

Who needs a med pack when you’ve got a medic with a … bone saw?

Note to stalkers fanboys: The Haruhi from Cosfest last year

It’s Lecture Time

After taking photos of the cosplayers wandering around the event area, I proceeded into the lecture theater where the stage events were. I was half asleep there for nearly 2 hours due to the awesome chairs. It makes me wonder how Ngee Ann Polytechnic students even stay awake in lectures with chairs so comfortable. I would be sleeping my way through the 3 years.

I found this event to be rather bland, but I guess it can’t be helped since it’s hosted by a school club with space and funding limitations. For the first time ever, I sat on my ass for 2 hours straight at a cosplay event. Of course, the chairs should share the blame too.

On an unrelated note event, I must have got up on the wrong side of the bed today. That explains my pathetic luck. I spent almost half an hour walking around after being given the wrong directions, searching for the correct bus stop to get home. When I finally got there, I missed 2 buses that refused to stop. Damn.

I see a few bits of ranging from decent to awesome cosplay here and there, but in overall it’s pretty average.

I lol’d at the ‘lecture time’ thing.

Also, that’s supposed to be Bill in the green jacket? Any L4D cosplayer is incomplete without three other fellows. All survivors have to complete the whole set (and effectively each other) IMO.

Nah, I’m joking. I only wanted to see Zoey cosplay.

No more “He is my Master” meido cosplay by haruhi from last year?

Haruhi and Kyon pair did a good job.

Hmmm… I sense a problem with dynamic range in some of your pictures. I suggest that you should try underexposing some of your images by 0.5 to 1.5 EV stops for some of the “outdoor” pictures. Indoor pictures, however, are pretty much OK. My tips/advice.

The SOY(A) ‘09 has been an eye-opener for me. Will be posting mine soon. (Were it not for my reformatting of my computer. ARRGGHH!!)

Seems like outdoor shoots aren’t a good idea after all. From what little coverage I’ve seen, the place is way crowded and messy. Makes me think twice about attending future outdoor cosplay events. At least Suntec exhibition hall has the railings and staircases for isolation.

FYI, you might want to invest in a flash unit since you’re covering events and portraiture. Fill-in flash is a lifesaver in these instances.
Also, you might want to keep your SQ5 in the bag while shooting. Don’t they get in the way? :P

AK > Who doesn’t want Zoey?

    TRM > Sadly no.

TP > Actually, most of my outdoor shots are underexposed rather than overexposed.

MrMayat > I guess you saw a photo of me on Clubsnap. Nah they don’t really get in the way. I was lazy anyway =P

The thing that really gets in my way are the glasses, but I take forever to put on my contacts since I seldom use them.

And yes, I’ll be getting my flash soon. Just a little more needed.

Woah I do really missed out a lot of cosplayers, didn’t see that lady version of Archer when I left.

Guess I need to stop getting lazy and update on the event too..
