Air Gear Confuses Me

While I’ve not watched the anime, I’ve been reading the manga. While the art is really awesome and fanservice fans would love the manga, I found myself getting more and more lost with each recent chapter.

Fanservice: The only non-confusing thing.

I can’t exactly remember when the plot started appearing blurry to me, but I’m pretty much clueless about what the heck’s happening now. The past few chapters have been more or less confusing. One moment, I thought Kogarasumaru was fighting it out with Sora and gang, then suddenly, they win and an Obama parody character pops out of nowhere for a couple of chapters.

This plunges my mind into a whirlpool, and that’s not the first time it’s happening for Air Gear. Even for the latest chapter without the parody character, I’m equally as clueless as I was.

Serious?

I really have no idea what’s fully going on, and this is probably a first for any manga I’ve ever read, or even any anime I’ve watched too. Even The Sky Crawlers might have been much easier to follow.

So, I started questioning the reason to that. I actually thought that the art was too complex, or to put it in a negative term, messy. However, One Piece a similar kind of art style too, and the flow of the plot still remains crystal clear to me. So it shouldn’t be the art.

Could it be that the story often has little jumps around the place, making it hard to catch? Or could it be that my attention, as well as my interest for the series might be fading? I really doubt this.

So is it just me, or does anyone share similar sentiments that this Shounen manga is getting too confusing for its’ own good?

I haven’t understood what was going on since Ringo was revealed to be evil or something.

Ikki & Ko were prepairing for the G-Tournament. But they were late with some documents to hand in before it, so the only way to re-enter G-tor is to beat old Sleeping forest.

didn’t get all the staff with Obama, and now they started G-Tor with the victory over some team(can’t remember what was the name of the team though)

tj_han > I think I got lost slightly later than you.

Mikizu > Oh so that’s what’s happening. But still, I don’t see how the manga I will be able to understand what’s going on again in a couple of chapters more.

Soshi > You should try reading the manga and scratching your head trying to figure out everything.

    Shin > Precisely!

I’m still surprised that air gear is still running. i ended up dropping it because it had way too many WTF moments for me

Double it’s ok. I only realized that I didn’t understand anything after reading 100 chapters of it. Now it lies forgotten buried in my consciousness. (^_^)

now we are too confusing people, for me i think it was around the chapter 200 when i got confused, then recently they started to talk about the sky net or something like that, and suddenly the guys that stole the regalias appeared out of nowhere to fuck up the thing

I dropped it ages ago and what’s up with the obama thing anyway? I think the manga is confusing from the start because it’s how the pages flow - the mangaka thinks that he could leave lots of bits out and we could still understand because the other half of the plot is still in his head and he was the only one who could understand the series fully. I don’t think readers should have to concentrate so hard on trying to understand the story either because the whole purpose of having something illustrated in front of you is so that you don’t have to read every single details like a book. But the art is truly AMAZING still.

Every once in a while when I get bored I read the latest chapter. It makes less and less sense every single time. I am not only referring to the story but also to the dialogue. If I had to make an honest guess, I would say that the author is fucking with us.

The plot’s easy enough to follow. Just read Uzumaki, play Final Fantasy, and then finish it off with Death Note. Then you’ll understand how much those things are rotting the minds of mangaka.

I was having fun with this series when all the plot points seemed to be metaphor instead of literal. All the legends were just ways to explain how things used to be fun, and added a sense of a skater culture. What REALLY ruined this series for me was two simple words: Gravity Children.

It ruined the flow and made me see all these “cool” characters as lame. Instead of normal people overcoming obstacles, they’re just genetically modified freak babies who have talent spliced into them. Then things got more like an emo-goth kid’s lame fanfiction smashing over any appeal the vast majority of characters had by making things waaaaay too serious. Finally comes the mangaka crutch:

“Let’s just make everything go so crazy you’re blitzed into accepting it.”

I wanted to see tricks and skill, and what we get are superpowers and the “fate of the world” crap, mixed with a healthy dose of coffee addled arthouse sensibilities that almost killed western comics in the last decade.

The only thing that can make you slog through it is ikki and his crew. They have the gall to be fun loving bastards with hard heads in a world of JRPG cliches. Except Ag(k)ito, because they pissed all over his character. No longer just the cop guy’s brother, he’s another experiment.

Hell, maybe cheating and making anyone with skill (other than a select few) modified freaks with genetic advantages handed to them is a way of making us care more about Kogarasumaru. Hopefully they won’t make it worse by:

A: Killing Ringo now that she’s got the whole “tragic heroine” vibe.
B: Killing Rika now that she’s pregnant. (classic cop-out)
C: Finding out Ikki IS the Sky Regalia, or that it’s coded to only bond with his DNA
D: Making all the members of Ikki’s crew Gravity Children or hybrids.
E: Finding out the Giant Crow is Ikki’s father, or that Ikki’s half-bird or some Japanese Mythological creature.

So honestly, the only characters I care about are the Kogarasumaru crew that aren’t experiments. Yeah, even onigiri’s cooler because he’s a human.

yeah id have to agree. after they introduced the gravity children and everything became literal i totally lost interest.

if there is some sort of message there, then i dont see it. i thought it was much more interesting as a competition between people who have similar ambitions with some life drama thrown in.

who would have thought, from the first hundred chapters of just competitions to be the best, the manga would flip over and become the convoluted story that it is now. excuse me if i dont think saving the world with roller blades makes it more interesting.

i feel like the same thing happened with tengo tenge, the other title the mangaka started [then halted to concentrate on air gear].

    attention deficiency disorder anyone?
