If this was a mirror image of the adaptation against the original, things would look ugly
If you’ve yet to notice, this site’s name’s a parody of Full Metal Panic, and that should drop the hint that I like FMP, A LOT. Hence, news of a live action movie adaptation of one of my all-time favourite series by Holly-screwy-wood is definitely horrible news. This was definitely not I was hoping for while I read the 10th volume of FMP Sigma on the train this morning.
I’ve always been a supporter of faithful adaptations. The closer the it is to the original work, the better, and the more I’m willing to spend money on the ticket and merchandise. As far as I know, American cinema always screws up at keeping it faithful to the original, at least for anything Asian that it tries to get its’ hands on. You don’t know how overjoyed I was when the Americanisation of Battle Royale was put on hold. I certainly don’t want the general crowd’s knowledge of Battle Royale to just be the Americanised version.
To start off judging an Americanised version, don’t even bother looking at the plot’s similarity, just look at how similar the character appearances. Appearances, after all, are important.
Characters who are originally of Asian descent don’t even remotely resemble anything Asian. I don’t see why they always have to get a non-Asian to play the role of one. And it’s not even because that actor has superior acting skills. That’s just logic I simply can’t compreh- OH WAIT, IT’S ALL FOR THE MOOLAH! Who cares if the cast doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance? They just want to milk the fans of the original!
Tell me, how exactly is Zac Efron going to fit the role of Sousuke?
He looks nothing like Sousuke, because he’s not of Japanese descent, and he’s metrosexual. While Sousuke doesn’t even head to the barber for his haircut, Zac would be busy styling his hair instead of protecting Chidori. Sousuke’s a badass soldier who fights wars ever since he was a kid. Zac’s far from badass. All he can do is sing and dance, and even so, I’m not even sure if that should be considered singing and dancing, or just a generation of noise. Finally, Zac’s just some dumb idol existing for the sole purpose of milking the wallets of equally retarded teenage fangirls dry.
Hold on a second, that’s only the lead cast of the film. We’ve not even heard of the co-cast! I can sense more impending clouds of gloom and doom.
I can foresee that this film is going to suck and there will be more self-proclaimed hardcore “fans” of Full Metal Panic. “Fans” who probably have never, and will never read/watch the original work. “Fans” who watch the movie only for the sake of drooling at the lead actor’s face.
Japanese film companies should be picking up the rights for anime/manga live action adaptations instead. They might not bag a 100% success rate, but from what I’ve seen so far, they’re far better than the American cinema’s failing attempts. They’re just better off sticking to their Marvel adaptations and whatnot.
While what I truly desire for this movie would be for it to never begin production, that’s just a hope which will never be fulfilled. Full Metal Panic’s demise via Americanised butchering is certain.

P.S. KyoAni, you guys can lighten the blow of this mess a little by granting us fans a forth season of FMP anytime soon. Please!

LOLZORS! Ever since I stumbled upon this piece of news on my Google Reader, I can’t stop laughing and make other people snort their coffee/milk/Cola out through their noses upon hearing this travesty.
I can’t help but imagine the need for Zac Efron: not many of you are in the “other”, more “mainstream” audience, and many teenage “normal” girls – Singaporean teenage girls included – have the hawts for Zac Efron. Well, tell that when he turns legal. (Look at the Jonas Brothers, for goodness sake. Nobody knows those triple idiots anymore! :D)
I digress. This is gotta be lolzors. I wanna seriously consider moving out of the anime hobby now. There is no peace in this subculture and lifestyle anymore.
Uh…while I don’t support the adaptation (and I think FMP isn’t exactly very good)- Souske is so meterosexual it isn’t even funny. No person in the military would be allowed to have hair that wild and “obviously gelled”. I mean wouldn’t you think being the pilot of an advanced robot the fact your hair might get in your eyes would be a distracting detail.
“Souske, you lost the mission. Why?”
“Well sir, I had a split end in my vision”.
Souske’s appearance is as much a product of lame marketable elements as is Zac Efron. Both are chiseled and have dead eyes. Both have hair that in the real world would be laughed at and get them butt raped. Both are manufactured by a large conglomerate to meet every quota girls would want in their dream man’s appearance. You want to make Souske really interesting have that scar on his face be a bit more than an attractive blemish. Have it be a scar that actually screwed him up. Nope, that doesn’t sell to girls. Now give him a cut on his cheek and WHAM.
It’s the same/worse with the female characters.
Zac Efron as Souske? Sounds like perfect casting to me (once again, don’t like FMP, always felt it was lazily written)

Souske doesn’t look like a 16 year old kid either and no one complains about that.
We’re talking about Zac not looking like Sousuke here, not about how Sousuke doesn’t look like a 16 year old kid. The main difference is the their physical appearance due to race. An American to be casting an Asian character simply just isn’t right.
Also, you’ll be surprised by some of the 16/17 year old Japanese kids I’ve met. Those guys look like they’re in their 20s.
This is bad news. What’s with Hollywood these days messing up with anime lately? Don’t they have enough screwing up game adaptations? Zac Efron. Really? I dread at the thought of seeing which lame and dumb chick they’re going to choose for Chidori. I really hope they don’t ever finish this movie so we can put this behind us.

I agree! I’ve loved FMP from the beginning and i dont wanna see it killed like this. i mean i hate death note and sky high not that bad but they made money in japan AND here! you wanna know why?! cause Asains are true to there own story.

You have to ask if those key parts to the real story are left out what is the fate of Mao,Kurz,Tessa(may not be a bad thing >_<)Wraith, even Kalinin? Anyone attached to just Mithril that are important to the story!?
i am VERY PISSED! and any fan should be pissed with me. The only hope i forsee is that is that they CAN screw this up… hear me out.
FMP has not been on TV or anything in the US (as far as i know) and the fan base is acctually really small compaired to say D.N. or Naruto or whatever. because the fan base is so small a lot of blushing fangirls will go to this and see it just for a chance to see Z.E. in uniform. ON top of that teh most popular result for FMP searchs is Fumoffu, so some idiots like Fumoffu and not the main story cause FMP is funny and romantic and the real story is awsome. they are hoping on the large fration of fans that are just like that. not FMP fans but Fumoffu fans…
you will also get fans like me that will go and see it knowing thier hearts will be broken just to support FMP and see that characters you love in a new way that will make you love the anime all that much more.
and to get to my point, this movie for those reasons just may do a little bit better than DB:E and if it does maybe Shoji Gatoh will get off his ass and write the next (and prolly last) novel so i… i mean we will finally know how it ends. and mybe we will get Season 4! maybe they will take teh light novels that have yet to become Manga into such. this crushing blow may just open things up for us REAL fans. but only if it does well… which it prolly wont….
P.S. i heard season four will be made after they are done with season 2 of MoHS…

If they’re going to do an American remake, you can pretty much guarantee none of the people will be of Japanese descent…or at least very few.
I don’t think it’s particularly fair to choose a picture of him from a movie in a completely different setting and style to use that as an example. I think if you messed up his hair, changed his attitude, and trained him to act like Sousuke, he could be pretty convincing.
Besides, Sousuke doesn’t even LOOK Japanese in the show. Anime people hardly ever do. I think the race is irrelevant in his case.
Rumor is that Zac won’t be doing it but just in case he is, I wish him well. I saw him in 17 Again and gained a whole new respect for him as an actor. I was a hater before seeing that movie and I was sad about all this too but honestly, now I think he’d be a great fit and I can’t wait to see if he does the Death Note movie. If he does this one too then awesome.
