There are only 3 Shonen JUMP manga series which I follow religiously. Bakuman, One Piece and Eyeshield 21. Now, I only have 2 remaining.
Gone with the wind, like Sena’s run
I wasn’t exactly expecting Eyeshield 21 to end so quickly after the match against the American team. I was looking forward to a plot which would extend much further beyond that match, featuring more interesting matches of Sena and gang against other teams after the All-Star Japan team dissolves. Sadly, it wasn’t as such.
While the storyline can be continued further, the mangaka might have ended it in order to label the match against the American team as the most epic match ever in the history of Eyeshield 21’s run. It’s just like how RPGs typically end with the hardest boss fight.

However, to me, the American match wasn’t as interesting as the one where Deimon went head on against Agon’s team for the first time. That match made quite an impression.
Somehow, I found the ending to have been rather unsatisfying. The final match should have ended with with a clear winner and loser, instead of a tie. There was one thing in the final chapter that I liked though. We finally get to see Sena graduating from Hiruma’s guidance. If Eyeshield 21 ever receives a sequel, I would want to witness a full proper match pitting Sena against one of the most entertaining anti-heroes in anime and manga.
Everything has to come to an end someday. So when will One Piece come to one?
Actually, from what it seems, the American Team won. I read the chapter a couple times to make sure I didn’t miss anything. When Sena came to Enma University, he recalled an image of Panther holding the trophy, though I didn’t see a label of it being first place or not. Plus, it can be assumed that Sena did NOT beat him, because he still said “I’ll catch up to you someday Panther.” Though I personally was hoping and expecting Sena to also pass the 4.1 speed, since against Shin, he was able to thanks to a boost from Shin’s attack.
Anyways, just like you, I only follow 3, though I go with ES21, Naruto, OP. One Piece better not end quickly. There are a couple things left:
- Saving Ace?
- Getting his crew back….and how…
- Meeting Shanks again?
- Meeting his father?
- Who gets the OP?
Actually, that was Panther winning the MVP trophy. The match did conclude into a tie, but Sena felt unrivaled due to Panther being the MVP and probably because he couldn’t run as fast as he could.
the series was supposed to go longer. the manga was supposed to have proper drawn out matches with Japan vs. other countries before they faced America. Shounen Jump forced the mangaka to finish the series earlier (like 2 or 3 years earlier) to get rid of the series because after the Christmas Bowl the series popularity died. It wasn’t even top 10 for Shounen manga’s and it kept plummeting.
As for One Piece goes, Oda said he has enough material to make it 20 years longer. And, he said the story is around half way, the series has been out for 12 years already. Who knows how long it can go.
But yeah, Eyeshield 21 was a great series, but it’s too bad it got Slam Dunk’d at the end.

I’m definitely sad that Eyeshield 21 is over, but I do think it ended gracefully and if it were to end “early” then this would be the best time to do it. I have to agree that the match against America was not the most exciting match but the idea of Japan vs America is in itself a huge deal.
Sigh. Well that’s one good manga taken off my weekly reading schedule.
i used to read eyeshield 21 every day it came iut, i loved the series….it´s just sad that its over….but there is room for a sequel rigth?…..I MEAN THERE STILL IS THE RICE BOWL!!!!!! we just got to hope they think of it, like a lucky punch or something…. but if i remember correcty, someone once said; “IM AMERICAN FOOTBALL THERE IS NO LUCKY PUNCHES!!! YOU MAKE THEM HAPPEN!” see where im getting to?
Have to agree with you on the Shinryuuji match. At first I thought Sena facing the “real” Eyeshield 21(Yamato) was going to be far more epic, and it was, but only to a certain extent. Oh well, one less thing to look forward to on the weekends. Also, it’s too bad Sena x Suzuna never happened.
That’s cause Yamato isn’t as badass as Agon. Agon is like the king of badassness.
Actually I felt that the manga should have ended at the Christmas Bowl since the buildup and goal of Hiruma, Musashi and Kurita was to get to the Christmas Bowl. The whole American arch just didn’t have the drama and detailing that the series was known to have- and I was hoping that it would be truly epic and really have alot of trick plays in it- but that didn’t happen.
(Who else was waiting for Sena to evolve in the match? There wasn’t any evolution!)
Shonen Jump should have either ended it at the Christmas Bowl or let Riichiro Inagaki and Yusuke Murata work to the best of their abilities and detail the games with the other countries. Why was it some games like the Militaria felt like only one chapter long? It was like all the games got sorta smushed together at the end although they showed us that incredible chart with all the countries pitted against one another!
But Eyeshield ending…. at 333?? Why not go for 666 which has Demon Devil Bat Meaning—? >.< Gah, we reach the ending to one of the most awesome manga ever…
Oh, and was it just me that thought Mr Don looked like a tricked up version of Bryan Hawk from Hajime no Ippo? XD Random, I know.
u guys are right they should continue this series but its over and like that one person said about OP having another 20 years of things for it, not even half way will it run out because kids around now like it but when we get older we wont like it think bout that. one piece is one of the greatest series ever made and hopefull luffy doesnt die or anything but the way its going keeps u in suspence so we will see what will happen in the future

I agree though that the story after the Christmas bowl were too rush. The should make a better use of everyone character more. I mean person like Yamato for example should be able to show his unstoppable ceacar charge and Akaba and etc. were left our. The end is that it was a draw at first but then they continue for fun to see who really win the match which was unknown. The trophy cup is the MVP cup for Panther and btw Shin Seijuro and Sena and Yamato and Gaoh and Kurita and Monta and Kid and etc. won 1 on 1 match in Japan Vs America. They should continue writing
i totally agree eyeshield 21 ende way sooner than i expected.It was an amazing series and I will always remember it.They should make a sequel with the team going to the rice bowl!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah… it should be more than just that after the american battle… its like a premature ejaculation…. and i do agree with finishing it at 666 instead of 333… shounen really did it bad this time!
lets us all vote for the mangaka to go all the way to 666 or if not, at least finish the rice bowl…

I am mad to see that the series had ended. I re-read the last 30 or so chapters. And I agree with everything everyone said above. Wtf is wrong with Shounen and their forced premature ending of the series. It was pretty good and according to the american ratings it was pretty high. We should spam SJ with revive Eyeshield or something
yeah the series end to fast… for me i like all of the matches i’ve seen in eyeshield 21… for me its my number 1 sport anime… plz some1 convince sh!t shounen jumps or other f***ing company to contunie eyeshield 21… plz make it at least 666 chapters… sena must reach 4.1 sec before ending the series… they should also fix the matches from other countries… like the indonesian team(correct me if i’m wrong) they seem confident in defeating American team…

hi…i’ve just finished reading the last chapter of Eyeshield 21…and I’am totally agreed the story was ended too soon…but if you’ve read Slamdunk all the way to the last chapter, you could see why it was ended like that…maybe because of lack of idea or meterial, because this is of course a sport manga…every match is the same thing, the difference are the way they played it…I think the best way to go further is to end it with a lot of questions, and then came up with a new start…hope the will be a continue…but personally, the best sport manga i’ve read so far is Slamdunk…
