One thing I like about albums that consist of the artiste singing their versions of songs done by other artistes is the exposure to songs from the past which you might not have heard of.

An example was Shimokawa Mikuni’s Reprise album released last December, with half of it featuring many classic anime theme songs. Although most of them were brought over from her 2003 Review album, there are a couple of new cover songs.

Ever since I came across the original Macross TV series and movie, I’ve always loved the classic 愛・覚えていますか. However, it was only with the recent release of Nakajima Megumi’s latest single 星間飛行 (Seikan Hikou) did I realise that there were actually quite a number of versions of the song out there.

I’m not sure if I managed to cover them all, but here’s all I’ve found.

I spent my Christmas Night watching the 2 hour long animated flick released in 1984, and I must say it was a good 2 hours spent. I’m convinced that it’s a zillion better than the countless MOE mongering crap that floats around in the anime scene these days. And I feel quite retarded for not viewing this epic movie till yesterday.

This movie has it all; Romance, Action, Mecha, Music. I was impressed with it, considering it was released in the 1980s. It was a truly epic feature for its time, just as Evangelion was epic for its time. Heck, I wasn’t even on this Earth then.

Despite the graphics being a notch below the anime aired in the 21st century, the storyline was a pioneer. Basically, there’s a love triangle between a hero and 2 girls, fights among 3 armies in the universe, and a happy ending. Don’t you agree that some parts of this storyline appear frequently in post 1980s anime?
