I’ve been seeing quite a bit of news regarding the special K-ON! guitars that are to be released, and was wondering why there wasn’t one for BECK. My question was answered while I was browsing through the music magazine section in Kinokuniya. Holding up a copy of the August release of GiGS, I was deciding if I should make the purchase just for the band score of Black Market Blues by 9mm Parabellum Bullet. While deciding, I flipped to the back of the magazine, and was surprised by the advertisement.

It was Koyuki’s Fender Mustang (MG69-BECK) going for 105,000 yen. The advertisement’s there probably because of the upcoming movie next year, which is still a long way to go.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say this again. BECK is awesome; The anime is, and so is the manga. The music rocks, despite the Engrish. Ever since I watched the anime, I have always hoped for a live action adaptation of it, be it a movie or a drama series. Of course, a non-Hollywood adaptation.

I’m not one who likes to repost news that has been posted, but what the heck, this piece of news has gotten me hyped up! After the likes of trashy live actions that have been floating around, such as Hollywood’s Dragon “suckass” ball Evolution, as well as the heart-attack inducing news of the Full Metal Panic live action, we can still get good things from time to time.
And so, come Fall of 2010, a live action BECK movie will be released in Japan cinemas. Finally!

It appears that K-ON! stands high and mighty in the limelight this Spring, with girls rocking out as a band. I’ve read countless posts and comments about how awesome it is, so I watched it.

While I found it much more interesting than Lucky Star, which I thought was really horrible, I still find myself thinking that BECK’s much better in comparison. I know that BECK’s anime ended long ago, but I don’t remember seeing much praise for it, except from tj_han. In fact, the amount of praise I’ve seen for K-On within a time frame of merely 2 episodes far outnumbers all the praise I’ve witnessed for BECK. I doubt it’s due the freshness of the series, considering other old anime still receive much praise despite concluding earlier than BECK.

It’s been a couple of months since I watched BECK back when I was in Japan. I needed something to help me kill time on those long train rides, especially the 7 hours from Hakata to Tokyo, and I randomly uploaded BECK into my iPod Touch. Before BECK, never had I come across anime series of the music genre, except for Nodame Cantabile which I’ve heard of but yet to watch or read.

I finished the series way before my trip ended, and ended up watching it over again, not because I had nothing else better to do on the train rides. Rather, it was because I found myself enjoying the band’s performance, especially their epic live at Greatful Sound in the last few episodes. Ever since then, I had always wanted to write about BECK, but the idea somehow got lost along the way.

I’ve never been musically inclined. I suck at the recorder back when I was in secondary school, and even now, I’m unable to play any musical instrument. I can’t sing in tune to save my life. Hell, I even suck at those guitar or drum games in the arcades.

Yet, this time, I’ve decided to challenge myself. I’ve been wanting to learn the guitar ever since I was 16, but procrastination often held me back. And so, it dragged on for 3 years, until I finally decided that if I wouldn’t learn it now, it would probably be never.
